Notts had reach fifty by the fourth over as Hales and Nash made short work of the 161 target, guiding their team to an emphatic 10-wicket victory with 22 balls to spare.
Eoin Morgan, who made that stunning unbeaten 83 off 29 balls against Somerset with the flurry of sixes to help his team into the last eight, led the revival, aided by a dropped catch by Hales on 41. But he departed soon after, to the final ball of the 18th over for 53. And it's safe to say Hales more than made up for the dropped catch.
Middlesex had made over 200 on four occasions in the Blast this season but 43-4 proved too much to come back from. Twice they lost two wickets in an over, big gun AB de Villiers out for 11 from nine balls.
Someone might turn this into a meme for Monday mornings...
More from man-of-the-match Chris Nash: "Once we got to six overs we thought we'd get to 10, once we got to 10 we thought we'd go again. To chase 160 we were pretty confident."
[On the prospect of facing former club Sussex on Finals Day] "They've got a big game tomorrow so let's see how Wrighty gets on."
Chris Nash wins the man-of-the-match for his 74 in his first T20 appearance of the season: "Once we got going it was great fun, a great crowd and a great night."
Notts skipper Dan Christian on Alex Hales: "Tonight was his best innings, him back to his best, hitting top of the stump balls back over the bowler's head."
Middlesex skipper Dawid Malan: "We mis-read it that we thought we could go hard in the first six."
Notts skipper Dan Christian: "We took early wickets, that always helps, we just bowled good balls all the way through. Morgan batted beautifully but apart from him we slowed them down."
Notts join Essex at Finals Day at Edgbaston on 21 September then. Sussex-Worcestershire tomorrow and Gloucestershire-Derbyshire on Saturday. They will have to go some to match what we have seen in the first two quarter-finals.
Supporters young and not quite so young all with arms aloft as the triumphant Notts openers are embraced by their team-mates. Another trip to Finals Day for Notts, their third in the last four years.
And they have got their wish! Incredible performance. Notts win by 10 wickets, Hales finishing on 83 from 47 balls and Chris Nash, making his first T20 appearance of the season, makes 74 from 53.
The crowd want a six to finish it.
Target 161
Hales has got a taxi booked for 04:45 in the morning apparently as he heads out to the Caribbean Premier League and he is one hit away from wrapping up this one for his team. Smart work.
Target 161
It's not Steve Finn's night, 16 from his first over, a routine dropped catch and now he has seen Alex Hales cut him away for six. Remarkable.
