This partnership has been an outstanding show of resolve. To be able to reign themselves in and to be able to understand, in the context of the game, that this partnership was so big when they came together.

Steve Johnson: This is the meekest England performance and the most boring Test match I’ve ever seen!
Mitchell Santner moves on to 91.
Time for drinks.
We often make the joke that England should get gin in a drinks break when things aren't going well. But they really should this time.
Mix it with a sports drink.

Think I'll turn off the updates received when England get a wicket. Really not needed.

Ben Stokes owes Jos Buttler a drink.
He bangs down one so short and wide that Buttler has no chance of stopping it running away for five wides.

Mitchell Santner follows that six with an easy single to rotate the strike. Textbook.

That is a big hit. He's got such a languid swing of the bat. We haven't seen it too often in this innings but he's starting to open up now.
Mitchell Santner levers a booming drive back down the ground for six.
A fine way for New Zealand to bring up the 500.

This is all too familiar, isn't it? While the bowling will be under scrutiny, our bowlers should rightly point out that we scored 353 on an absolute road, when we should have scored 553! How many times have we said, go abroad, score big and put pressure on? 353 is a great score in England but elsewhere is well below par. Had my rant, thanks.

I do think the England bowlers have stuck at it well today. They've had a good basic plan, they've beaten the edge a couple of times, had a couple of shouts.
Lead by 146
Ben Stokes sends down a leg-side wide and Jos Buttler has to leap to prevent it streaking to the boundary. Buttler has been given a tough workout by his bowlers in this Test.
BJ Watling pushes through extra cover for a couple more.
A colleague has 'kindly' just reminded me that as I got up to make a tea at the end of yesterday's tea break and missed Dom Sibley's stunning catch, I've not seen a live wicket in over 24 hours now.
Cheers, mate.

He's been itching to come down the wicket and do that.

I think Mitchell Santner has been looking to do that for his whole innings.

In reality, this wicket looks like an absolute feather bed. It's one of the flattest wickets I've ever seen.
Watling 164, Santner 77
BJ Watling continues serenly on, playing late to punch through point for four. Immaculate timing.
