  1. NZ 546-6published at 188.3 overs

What a shot! BJ Watling brings out the reverse paddle sweep to the returning Joe Root and it zips away for four.

    Absolutely toying with England here.

It goes without saying, but this is extremely dispiriting for England. The one thing they'll clutch onto, is this pitch is still good and slow.

This is a test for the whole England team, but Sam Curran is a very young man, who hasn't played much international cricket, especially overseas in these sorts of conditions. Jofra Archer too. It's a huge learning curve for the England attack.

    NZ 542-6published at 188 overs

    Lead by 189

In a strong field of contenders, Sam Curran has just bowled the worst over by an England player in this innings.

Capped off with a nothing short ball that a set Mitchell Santner can lean back and whack into the grass banks over deep mid-wicket for six.

He's powered that back past Sam Curran.

  6. NZ 536-6published at 187.5 overs

Mitchell Santner is unfurling his levers with aplomb now - a pull shot rockets out towards the fence but Ollie Pope puts in a superb dive to keep it to two.

No stopping that though - Sam Curran sends down a low full toss and Santner dimissively punches it back down the ground for four.

    Buffet bowling.

Reading the New Zealand press release when the squad was announced, they wanted to bolster their lower-order batting which is why Mitchell Santner was selected.

  9. NZ 529-6published at 187 overs

    Lead by 176

Mitchell Santner swivels fine for four more, this time beating Zak Crawley's dive.

It's been a courageous innings. He's looked all at sea against the short ball at times but he's toughed it out. One of the most memorable days in his career. He's helped lead New Zealand into an extremely strong position.

100 for Santnerpublished at 186.4 overs

The biggest cheer of the day at the Bay Oval and for good reason.

Mitchell Santner has his maiden Test century.

A short ball from Ben Stokes and Santner swivels it round the corner. Zak Crawley puts in a fine diving stop to prevent the boundary but it gives Santner enough time to scamper back for the second.

Off comes the helmet but it's a restrained celebration overall, perfeclty reflecting this superb knock.

You can't fault England today, at all. They've stuck at it, their fielding and bowling efforts have been good. Their plans early on were conventional and they've moved through different plans. There's just been very little from the New Zealand batsman.

What irritates me is that NZ have made the pitch look an absolute road and yet I have this nagging feeling England will make it look like a minefield second time round and get skittled.

  14. NZ 523-6published at 186 overs

    Watling 170, Santner 98

Santner moves to 98, wisely sending Watling back before he can take a risky second run.

Mitchell Santner does not rate Jack Leach.

Bespectacled slow-left armer on bespectabled slow-left armer carnage as he leathers another six down the ground.

    Santner moves to 97.

BJ Watling taps a single to bring up the 200 partnership off 450 balls.

It's barely acknowledged by Walting and Mitchell Santner, fitting for the quiet discipline they have shown.

It even takes another ball for the Bay Oval PA to realise and announce the 200 stand.

What happened the last time New Zealand scored 500 against England?

They lost. Remind Bryan Waddle of that one.
