It's that stage of the day where you just have to keep hanging in there. England have done well to control the scoring rate, I think they've stuck to their guns pretty well.

BJ Watling sweeps firmly round his front pad for one.

Mitchell Santner continues to use his feet well to Jack Leach and taps another couple of singles.

That is Mitchell Santner's highest Test score. His previous was 73 against Bangladesh in Wellington in 2017.

    Santner 74 off 224 balls

England have gone through all known letters and numbers so are now on Plan #.

Which is actually very similar to Plan A against Mitchell Santner - men out for the short ball, but this time with Santner having notched up 73 runs beforehand. Creative.

Make that 74 as he taps a single - his highest Test score. A superb grafting innings so far.

Stokes could win the battle here but runs might also rattle up quickly.

This is a difficult period of the game for England. Joe Denly and Dom Sibley know that at some stage New Zealand will accelerate and the game will move on. The pitch still looks an absolute belter but they'll be fatigued and tired and will know they need to concentrate, knowing that England can't win. It's a mindset that the modern player doesn't like, they like to be proactive.

Jack Leach returns and Mitchell Santner greets him by skipping down and driving through extra cover for four.

That takes him to 73 - equalling his highest score in Tests.

    A first century beckons?

Things worse than being an England fan right now: being a Pakistan fan.

Australia aren't struggling for wickets across the Tasman Sea. They've taken two already this morning, and need just five more for an innings victory against Pakistan at the Gabba. The full scorecard from Brisbane is here.

Climbing up the wall might be an easier option for Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad right now rather than bowling another spell.

BJ Watling has now faced 401 deliveries.

The last six of which were dot balls as Jofra Archer sends down a tidy maiden in his 41st over.

Maybe we are seeing a more positive approach from New Zealand now. They've done the hard work and now with flagging bodies and spirits they can cut loose a little bit and look to be bowling just before tea.

Stuart Broad tosses it up wide and Mitchell Santner marmalises a square drive through point for four more.

Broad strays onto the pads next up and Santner whips it through mid-wicket for four more.

This could be a(nother) very, very bruising session for England.

The pitch seems to be getting slightly lower. England are understandably looking weary and it's inexplicable really that Stuart Broad and Jofra Archer have bowled 72 overs between them and not taken a wicket.
