England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Bryan Waddle said earlier that Trent Boult wasn't 100% fit and the fact that Neil Wagner is trying to pitch the ball up and swing it rather than Boult is significant for England.

Boult is normally their go to bowler, no matter what the wicket.

    Trail by 180 runs

Joe Denly is almost tempted into a fiddle outside his off stump at this latest Neil Wagner delivery, but he changes his mind at the last second.

Trent Boult is loosening up. Or he's just bored and doing a bit of yoga. I wonder if that back is causing him a bit of mischief...

    Andrew Samson
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

That's the longest Ben Stokes has taken to get off the mark. His previous record without scoring was when he got a 17-ball duck in Bridgetown earlier in the year.

That's a slice of fortune for Ben Stokes.

  5. Eng 80-4published at 50 overs

Oh, and Ben Stokes is almost nutmegged next ball!

Sharp turn from Santner and it spits up on Stokes, hitting the bottom of the bat and dropping inbetween his legs, just a centimetre short of the stumps. He's so lucky that hasn't hit...

  6. Eng 80-4published at 49.4 overs

Ben Stokes has got suncream finger marks all over his helmet.

He's off the mark in fine style, though, getting underneath a rare Mitchell Santner short ball and driving it handsomely through cover for four. Shot!

It was the stoppiness in the wicket that did for Root I think. He's normally so good at guiding it through backward point.

It was a really strange dismissal from Joe Root. He hadn't looked in any trouble at all.

  9. Eng 75-4published at 49 overs

    Trail by 187 runs

Neil Wagner is operating on about medium anger at the minute, getting a couple of deliveries to zip past a disinterested Ben Stokes' off stump.

Stokes covers up in perfect defence to end the over, and another maiden gets added to the scoresheet.

England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Neil Wagner is coming on. It feels like the time of the morning for him. He's often been the man for New Zealand and he'll be trying to make something happen.

  11. Eng 75-4published at 48 overs

    Santner 19-11-16-3

Mitchell Santner tosses up a tempter outside off that Joe Denly wisely leaves alone.

Santner gets him playing for the rest of the over but Denly shows the full face of the bat to see out a maiden.

It was one of those dismissals where you walk off thinking I could have hit that anywhere.

It was a very nondescript shot from Joe Root. He looked caught in two minds to me.

  14. Eng 75-4published at 47 overs

Colin de Grandhomme tries out the bouncer method to Ben Stokes and Stokes, wisely, doesn't guide the ball to gully.

    Sigh.

Barney: Both Root’s dismissals this match have been catching practice, simply not good enough. He’s a liability as captain and is now a shadow of his former self with the bat.

Dave: More brains in a pork pie. Scrambled mind for young Joe at the moment. He's so far behind his previous contemporaries Smith, Kohli and Williamson now.

  17. Eng 74-4published at 46 overs

It is turning for Mitchell Santner, the ball curling back in to Ben Stokes, and Stokes leaves what he can before jogging through for a bye.

    Mark Ramprakash
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

Technically Joe Root looked much more like his old self today. His head was in a better position and he lined up the ball better. That's something he can cling onto for the next game at least.

  20. Eng 74-4published at 45 overs

    73 overs left

That'll be four runs for Joe Denly, as Colin de Grandhomme strays onto his pads and he's tickled calmly away to fine leg.

I will never, ever tire of typing Colin de Grandhomme. What a name.
