There's potential here for quite a compelling day. England will feel it shouldn't have been this way after winning the toss and setting up a foundation on day one.

Joe Denly's not having a lot of fun against Neil Wagner, as he goes fishing outside his off stump and watches the ball just slide past the outside edge.

Denly weaves his way out of the direction of some grumpy short balls before he toe-ends a drive into the leg side.

New Zealand have an excellent field for Ben Stokes. They've got the bait there, that if he wants to play a sweep shot, he'll get a boundary.

He is working really hard to take one ball at a time.

A very, very good over from Mitchell Santner ends with a spitting, snarling delivery that tangles Ben Stokes up, but unless Kane Williamson sticks a fielder on his right boot, there's no chance of anyone catching that.

Kane Williamson is now teasing us. He's bowling to the man at mid-on.

The news from New Zealand is Trent Boult has a pain in his right side and he will be off until lunch.

Matthew Theobald: Blimey. Ben Stokes has only just got his cape back from being dry cleaned in the summer and he needs it again.

Neil Wagner is not the right man to bowl in my opinion. This isn't the Wagner style, bowling line and length. The only value really is having him run on the pitch.

    Wagner 10-4-8-0

Wide goes Neil Wagner, pushing the ball right across Joe Denly, but Denly's not going to be tempted by that.

Now then. That's hit something, a Wagner short ball rising up on Denly and hitting the shoulder of the bat, but it drops into the vacant spot at silly point. There's just a couple of little things going England's way...

On to the back foot hustles Ben Stokes, and he milks an easy couple of runs through cover.

There's four men around the bat for Mitchell Santner as he bowls to Stokes, but it's probably just a bit too short to consistently trouble Stokes.

Even Ben Stokes, who is in imperious form, is going to find it hard out there. There could always be a ball that's got your name on it.

Sad to see how far behind the other "Big Four" Joe Root has fallen. It's like trying to explain to kids today that Blackburn once won the Premier League.

That was a heavy walk up the dressing room stairs for Boult...

Neil Wagner finds the bottom of Joe Denly's bat and it goes on the bounce to the slip cordon before Denly is completely outfoxed by a ball that smashes into the top of his bat.

Trent Boult didn't look right, and he's headed straight off the field.

Ben Stokes is prepared to take it on if it's a really bad or loose ball.

  19. Eng 86-4published at 52 overs

    Stokes 8, Denly 18

That's probably half a fiddle from Ben Stokes, wobbling his bat in the vague direction of his off stump before drawing it back towards him.

There's a bit of a grimace on Trent Boult's face as he gets through his action, and a floaty short ball is absolutely pummelled through the covers for four.

    And here is Trent Boult...

He's got the rather fabulous figures of 5-4-2-0.
