Joe Root is not six months into the job, he's been doing it for a while now so I think it's fair to look at him objectively to see if he's improving both tactically and how his batting has been impacted.

But you don't just change for the sake of it. What are the alternatives?

England should draw this game comfortably and if they don't it will be one of the worse and most embarrassing defeats they've suffered in years. They should never be losing on a pitch like this.

It's been a horrible start to the new regime and the new approach.

When Joe Root spoke to us beforehand about Jofra Archer and him playing the enforcer role. It shouldn't be a one size fits all approach.

He's a once in a generation toy, a weapon that can potentially change England's fortunes in overseas conditions but you feel like Joe Root is still grappling with the manual and he doesn't know how to use him. He seems so set on sticking to preset plans with Jofra Archer.

Jofra Archer has a fantastic bouncer and it's a weapon that England want to use but this is not the right pitch to use it on.

On the first day England did try, they didn't push enough singles for me but they were trying this new approach at least.

The bowling was just bonkers though. The patient, disciplined approach they're preaching with the batting went out the window when they were fielding. It was utterly bonkers.

England are not ruthless enough about scoring first-innings runs. Before the game Joe Root and Chris Silverwood spoke about scoring 400 but 400 isn't enough, that still would have seen them with a 200-run deficit in the first innings in this game. They need to aim far higher.

The second question is whether they are actually capable of aiming higher or whether 400-450 is just what they are capable of.

I thought Stuart Broad was brave this morning saying we don't think we can do it, we expect to do it.

The possible injury we have to Trent Boult might be the clincher. But it's still going to have to be a disciplined performance.

I think it does hinge on this partnership and how deep they can take the game.

    Thanks Amy.

England have given themselves a chance after the first session but can they do it?

  11. Postpublished at 00:06 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2019

England scored just 33 runs in that session, for the loss of one wicket - but it was a big wicket in Joe Root.

Mitchell Santner has 3-23 to his name, while Colin de Grandhomme has 1-15.

I'm off for a bit. Callum Matthews will take you through to tea. If we get there, that is...

I'm still angry about Joe Root's shot to get out.

Lack of sleep might be catching up with me.

Glove39: I now understand why people get confused by Test match cricket. It's onto the 5th day, I'm sacrificing sleep to watch the conclusion and there's a good chance it could end in a draw. Wouldn't change it for the world.

Joe Denly has made a very valuable seven runs in that session. Very well played, very determined.

He's, er, not what you'd call an enthusiastic bowler, Kane Williamson.

Joe Denly drives three nicely through mid-wicket before Williamson bowls a moon ball that Ben Stokes rather gently pats away for a couple. There's some turn there, though.

Elsewhere in the world of cricket, England's Tom Curran starred in South Africa's T20 franchise competition earlier today. The England bowler took 3-30, including the key wicket of Chris Gayle, to help Tshwane Spartans beat Jozi Stars by 20 runs. The full scorecard for that game is here.

You need a little bit of luck in these situations.

"Oh, sorry!" says BJ Watling as Mitchell Santner gets a delivery to scoot along the pitch and beat Watling down by his right ankle, despite Watling almost doing the splits to get at it.

That didn't come off a footmark, you know. It's just hit the pitch and scuttled through...
