When we reflect on this game, yes New Zealand got a monster of a score, but if England had capitalised on the hard work they'd done on the first day, we'd be talking about a different contest.

Jofra Archer ducks three bouncers with ease and defends anything straight to see out the over.

    Proper batting.

That's a very, very elegant shot.

And Jofra Archer greets Neil Wagner by slapping a long hop through the covers for four.

    A delicious drive.

    Neil Wagner returns.

The only angry man in New Zealand has taken 3-40 so far.

Eeshk. Mitchell Santner gets it to slide on with the arm and it just beats the outside edge of Sam Curran's bat.

    Curran plays out a maiden.

Southee must have one of the slowest walks back to his mark, whereas Wagner marches back. I reckon Wagner bowls two balls to every one of Southee's.

Not much happening for Tim Southee there.

Jofra Archer drives the last ball through the covers for what should have been one but turns into two as Kane Williamson misfields.

There are 25 overs to go.

Matt Smith: I'm furious with England's performance in this Test. Awful with the bat and worse with the ball, this has been embarrassing. These are professionals, they are not new to Test cricket, why are we so far behind? Because we're not without talent.

I went up Mount Maunganui last night to try and catch the sunset but didn't see anything because it was cloudy. I got back into town at 9pm and all the restaurants were closed.

No miscue yet. Archer sees off Santner.

Archer has shown an inclination to attack Santner so I wonder if there's a miscue coming up at some point. He's showing his potential, though. He's clearly able to bat.

Each minute that goes by, England are growing in confidence but we're seeing some uneven bounce after tea. The ball keeps scuttling through low.

    Another over goes by.

Sam Curran finds the fence again as he carves a wide ball through a gap in the cordon. No fortune there, all placement. Shot.

And that's the 50 partnership up. Good, positive batting from these two.

Could England have done with a bit more of this earlier on? Not reckless, but just a bit more proactive. They would perhaps be up near parity by now.

Santner needs to give it some air to Archer - get it above his eyeline because he's likely to have a dip.

Hello! The odd ugly swipe aside, Jofra Archer is finally showing his talent with the bat here.

Mitchell Santner sends down a low full toss and Archer gets in a big stride to punch it back down the ground for four.
