We New Zealanders sledge in a nice way. We'd just be saying to Joe Denly and Ollie Pope that if they played well here, play some nice shots, then they could cement their place in the Test side.

  3. Eng 122-5published at 71 overs

New Zealand are crowding Ollie Pope. They've got a slip in and then a short mid-wicket, short mid-off, short cover and short point.

The Surrey batsman finds a gap between gully and point to get off the mark with a single.

  4. Eng 121-5published at 70.2 overs

Ollie Pope is struck on the pad and there's an appeal from New Zealand but umpire Dharmasena shakes his head. That was going down leg.

  5. Eng 121-5published at 70 overs

Joe Denly sees off another Mitchell Santner over.

The new ball is 10 overs away - that could be crucial.

About to fall over in a heap I suspect once again. Chris Silverwood's job is huge. We literally have no Test batsmen available to us.

Ben Stokes didn't want to sit there and not score. Runs are still relatively important as it might be a tight finish. It was short and wide so Stokes threw his hands at it.

He's played on! He's played into his stumps! I suspect the ball kept low.

That would have missed the stumps by two feet.

    Uh oh.

Ben Stokes will not be happy at all with this shot. It's well outside off stump so Stokes decides to try and cut. He gets a thick inside edge into the ground and the ball cannons into leg stump removing one bail.

England's chances of saving this Test have just reduced massively.

Mitchell Santner is giving it plenty of air now as he looks to getting England driving but Joe Denly plays it well.

    Another over ticks by.

These two have steadied the nerves after Joe Root fell. There is still a long way to go but their odds of saving the match are rising with every passing over.

  15. Eng 120-4published at 67 overs

Joe Denly decides to leave one quite late resulting in Tim Southee appealing for a caught behind. Nothing happening there, though.

He looks to BJ Watling to debate a review but the reply must be along the lines of "absolutely not" judging by the laugh that follows from Southee.

Denly picks up a couple through the off side before repeating the trick next ball. That's the 50 partnership between these two now.

That is big news and may significantly enhance England's chances of saving the Test.

Kane Williamson will have to get the final six wickets with a frontline attack of just Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and Mitchell Santner.

It would not be good for Test cricket to have too many pitches like this one.

Though you see Tim Southee jag that back into the stumps there and remember that fine bowlers will find a way on any wicket.
