  1. Eng 115-4published at 65 overs

Ben Stokes and Joe Denly exchange singles to start Tim Southee's latest over.

Southee is bowling round the wicket to Stokes and the all-rounder shoulders his arms to an in-swinger that only misses his off stump by a couple of inches in the end.

Oh, streaky! Ben Stokes picks up another boundary as he gets a thick edge over BJ Watling. That was a pretty similar shot to his first innings dismissal.

I think England (i.e Ben Stokes) will save this game, although my judgment may be slightly impaired due to five nights of sleep deprivation.

  3. Eng 109-4published at 64 overs

Joe Denly blocks out another maiden off Mitchell Santner. The left-arm spinner has bowled 14 maidens now.

Denly has had a lot of criticism during his England career but he's doing a job here. He's been there for 111 balls now.

  4. Eng 109-4published at 63 overs

Ben Stokes picks up his second boundary since lunch with a thick edge through the slip cordon. He played it with soft hands though and it was all along the ground.

    He looks really solid.

Tyler Robertshaw: Everyone's going to point fingers at Root, but did his bowlers really bowl well enough? Broad has played 132 Tests, so surely he knows how to bowl on a flat pitch?

  6. Eng 105-4published at 62 overs

Ben Stokes has a half-prod at one outside off stump. He got on the front foot but almost withdrew his bat and let the ball go through to BJ Watling. Mitchell Santner has a wry smile.

Another over ticked off for England.

That was a fine delivery. It might have hit a crack - it really took off.

  8. Eng 104-4published at 61 overs

Offt, that's a fine delivery from Tim Southee. He's bowling an accurate stump-to-stump line and gets one to go inbetween Joe Denly's inside edge and pad. That cut the 33-year-old in half.

Denly flicks off his pads for a couple to end the over.

Ben Stokes has batted very responsibly but he will put the bad ball away - 262 is a worthwhile target for England because if they get past it, that takes more time out of the game.

  11. Eng 102-4published at 60 overs

Ben Stokes is surrounded. Santner has got a slip, leg slip, silly point and short leg.

Stokes blocks out the next four balls before padding up to one outside off stump. BJ Watling appeals but the rest of the New Zealand team just walk off to get into position for the next over.

  12. Eng 102-4published at 59.1 overs

And Ben Stokes flicks the first ball through mid-wicket for four.

Good start to the session for England.

Play will be getting back under way in the next couple of minutes.

There are a minimum of 59 overs left in the day - New Zealand can bowl more if they get through them quickly. They got through 31.2 overs in the first session so they are already slightly ahead of the expected rate.

This is Joe Root's worse game when batting twice since becoming captain.

I disagree with Sam Curran taking the new ball with the hope of a bit of swing. There are two types of new ball bowlers so if you want to give Curran it, you take it off Stuart Broad.

I thought England missed Jonny Bairstow in the field actually. On a long day like the third day you need a keeper who is really keeping the volume going, moving people around, being busy and rushing up and down between the stumps.

England have been absolutely muted by the conditions and it's a concern.

We're looking at it from an England perspective but New Zealand are ranked second in the Test rankings, they have been fantastic. They haven't allowed England to succeed. They deserve a lot of credit for the way they've played, it's the way that England want to play.

Rory Burns is a County Championship winning captain, not that he played a captain's shot last night. I'm not saying he should be England's next captain but there are players like him and Tom Abell at Somerset learning the trade in the County circuit.
