England are doing a good job. Denly is trying to be aggressive when he can. Sibley is prepared to be patient. Time is irrelevant. The longer they keep South Africa there, they are building themselves into a position of strength.

Kagiso Philander replaces the parsimonious Philander.

And Joe Denly cracks uppishly over the covers for a couple before slashing to deep point for a single.

We hear a lot about Sibley's patience. He has a lot of it. Let's see how long he can take Maharaj tossing it into the rough outside leg stump. When will he play a shot?

  4. Eng 71-1published at 29 overs

Maharaj tries something different, going over the wicket to Sibley, who pads away.

Pieter Malan - who must be one of the biggest units to ever field at short leg - takes the catch.

Brief excitement but that was all pad.

    Another maiden.

    Philander 9-6-7-0

In more usual scenes, Vernon Philander bowls another maiden.

I mean...he's must've had to thrash the tree about the living room to create that needle spillage. Remarkable scenes.

Keshav Maharaj tosses it up on leg stump and Dom Sibley crisply clips it off his pads through backward square leg for four.

Sibley has remarkable hand-eye co-ordination off his pads. Very Trottian.

He'll go far if that open stance doesn't cause him too many issues playing outside off-stump.

25 overs gone and Joe Root not at the crease? He'll be getting pad rash.

Quinton de Kock is up to the stumps to keep Joe Denly honest against Vernon Philander.

Eesh. And Denly nearly tickles the first delivery straight to the wicketkeeper.

Another maiden for Big Vern - his 5th in eight overs.

    Eng 65-1

Dom Sibley flashes at it and edges wide of the diving Faf du Plessis at slip. Not convincing.

  14. Eng 61-1published at 24.5 overs

Joe Denly goes after Keshav Maharaj again, opening the blade more this time to hit over extra cover and away for three runs.

The slow left-armer gets a bit of bite to Dom Sibley, who pushes it away.

Ooh. Sibley plays very late at one that leaves him and ends up running it down off a thick outside edge on the bounce to slip.

Big Vern isn't about to be carted about though.

A testing maiden to Dom Sibley.

    Hello! Shackles broken?

Joe Denly skips down the pitch and clatters Keshav Maharaj back over mid-off for four.

England's lead up over 100 now.

    Sibley 19, Denly 9

Nagging as ever from Philander as he sends down a maiden to Denly.

    England very watchful since lunch.
