That was a long-hop from Maharaj. He holed out to mid-wicket. You wonder whether England really need to go through the motions, and should just get bowling.

Sam Curran has failed to tuck into the buffet.

The third ball after lunch is a rank long-hop from Keshav Maharaj and Curran rocks back to slap it through the leg side.

But he's ended up smacking it straight to Zubayr Hamza, who takes a good low catch at mid-wicket.

I despise England's attitude to declarations. We're already more ahead than the highest run-chase in the history of the sport. Stop this pointless limbo of massaging batting egos and attack them. It's so negative and smarmy.

Dom Sibley reminds me of Tim nice but Dim, the Harry Enfield character, is that too harsh?

You may have had a slow first morning back at work today anyway, but I can guarantee Ben Stokes has put your productivity to shame.

  8. England lose Brown for ODIs and T20spublished at 11:00 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2020

Another day, another injury update from England's tour of South Africa...

Seamer Pat Brown has withdrawn from the one-day and Twenty20 squads because of a stress fracture in his lower back.

The 21-year-old had a recurrence of symptoms while preparing to play for Melbourne Stars in Australia's Big Bash League, and will return to Worcestershire for treatment.

England play South Africa in three ODIs and three T20s in February.

England opener Dom Sibley has scored 125 not out off 299 balls over 473 minutes.

Very welcome numbers for England fans.

We know he's strong off his hips and through mid-wicket, but he's played some lovely off-side shots in this knock as well...

It feels like this game is a big momentum-changer for England. This score puts into perspective England's first-innings score.

  13. Banton hits five sixes in a rowpublished at 10:49 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2020

Meanwhile in the Big Bash League, Tom Banton has been doing his best Ben Stokes impression with a savage 56 off 19 balls for Brisbane Heat.

That included a remarkable five sixes in a row as the Heat amassed 119-4 against Sydney Thunder in a game reduced to eight overs per side.

Surely this Test match proves how much we need to keep our precious five days? All the beauty and drama of the ebbs and flows would have been lost if this was the final day. Dom Sibley would not have had time to build his century, and there would only be two sessions left. The whole dynamics would be changed. Surely with ODIs T20s and now The Hundred, we have enough to entertain those who like things fast-paced?

If one or two South Africa players are ill maybe England shouldn't give them the rest of a lunch break but tell them they've declared now.

    Cheers Steph.

Very much a feeling of what this England team could've been these past few years today.

With a top order playing sensibly and laying a solid platform, the likes of Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler can take the game away from the opposition at an astonishing pace.

A lovely scene in the England dressing room, where every player and member of staff is applauding Dom Sibley.

Just imagine what it feels like to be him right now.

There is some word that the bug that has gone round the England dressing room might be affecting South Africa now.

I will be absolutely astonished if South Africa chase this down. Will England come back out after lunch?
