Totum: Andile Phehlukwayo's name would be worth 36 in scrabble. You are welcome.

Quinton de Kock is standing with his arms behind his back, gazing around at this great ground. He must be seething inside. Andile Phehlukwayo bowls another wide. That's his fifth in his over and a bit.

Joe Denly has the pink collar on his shirt turned up. England are wearing special shirts with a flash of pink for today's fundraiser, remember. He always looks stylish but is just using up one or two more balls an over than Root. Still, the required rate is only 4.17.

After the initial blitz from Bairstow and Roy, England are now playing percentage ODI cricket. South Africa will almost certainly need to bowl them out to win.

    Root 35, Denly 20

England are comfortable here with Phehlukwayo spraying it all over the shop and Joe Root calming things down, knocking ones and twos into the deep.

I've been distracted by the Under-19 World Cup final between India and Bangladesh. Bangladesh are only chasing 178 to win - and reached 50-0 in the ninth over - but they're now 87-5. India leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi has taken 4-15 from six overs. It's tense.

For all the criticisms that Bairstow now gets in the Test arena, he is a seriously good one day player and should get all the plaudits for that. What a dangerous opening pair him and Roy make.

Oh my. Phehlukwayo gets two balls on target but then bowls two more wides. We've had six balls in this over but there are still four more to come.

    The crowd are booing.

And another wide from Phehlukwayo. Not a great start.

    Thanks Jack.

Andile Phehlukwayo begins his spell with a leg-side wide.

With England about halfway to their target, here is Matthew Henry to take you through to the end of this match.

And that's a tidy start from slow left-armer Smuts, just one from it.

Mike Bell: It's only a game and three quarters of a 50 over match (excluding the other day's washout) since England won the World Cup. But apparently it's time for Eoin Morgan to step aside. Really? We don't take many prisoners on here sometimes do we?

Tabraiz Shamsi loops it up wide, giving Joe Denly room to free his arms and crash it to the boundary.

The Joes have done a fine job of settling it down and putting England back on top.

    Ngidi 5-0-52-0

Lungi Ngidi, still failing to find any rhythm, over-pitches again and Joe Root clips it crisply through mid-wicket for three.

De Kock may have to take Ngidi out of the attack again.

This is where Joe Root is superb in one-day cricket.

No fuss, no risks and he's 25 off 26 balls without you even really noticing.

Joe Denly gets in a tangle and plays an ungainly pull shot just short of a close in square leg.

You know that deft, open-faced guide through third man that Joe Root plays so well?

    That. For four.

    Lovely start after drinks.

I think the preparation is starting. England are carrying on with certain older players, especially those likely to feature in this year's T20 World Cup, and bringing in others that can learn from them.

I can see Eoin Morgan playing another 18 months to two years and then handing the one-day captaincy over to Jos Buttler in the build-up to the 2023 World Cup.
