  2. 'This is Joe's team'published at 18:42 British Summer Time 12 July 2020

Ben Stokes, speaking to TMS, on leaving Stuart Broad out: "If I was to regret that decision then it doesn’t send a good message to guys who played.

"I thought Stuart’s interview was absolutely brilliant, to see the emotion and desire he still has burning inside him is great to see as a senior player. And it shows he's nowhere near done."

On being stand-in captain: "I've loved this week but it comes with its stresses. I had a pretty restless sleep last night but the other four nights I found myself sleeping well. I'm looking forward to welcoming Joe back. I've been happy to take over the reins but this is Joe's team."

On not having a crowd: "My message to the players was we don’t need a crowd to get up for playing for England. Look at our chest, we have three lions and a number, the opportunity is all that it should take. It was different in terms of atmosphere. The Barmy Army give you energy but it doesn't affect the effort."

  3. 'Victory means a lot to us'published at 18:40 British Summer Time 12 July 2020

West Indies' Jermaine Blackwood, who made 95, on Sky Sports: "It means a lot to us. I'd like to say well done to the guys."

On his battle with Jofra Archer: "It's the first time I'm facing him, so I didn't really know what to expect. It was a good challenge - he bowled pretty good to me - but that's cricket. He bowled a lovely spell."

On his dismissal with 11 runs needed to win: "I wasn't thinking about the hundred at any point in time. I was looking at the score and getting the team across the line."

  4. Archer makes an impressionpublished at 18:38 British Summer Time 12 July 2020

One positive for England today was the return to form for Jofra Archer.

He was very impressive on a lifeless pitch.

You have to take your hat off to the West Indies - they made a courageous decision to come and play in the UK. The way this match has swung back and forth is why we love Test cricket and if it wasn't for them agreeing to come it would never have happened. So even though England lost, thank you West Indies cricket.

  7. 'We weren't ruthless enough with the bat'published at 18:34 British Summer Time 12 July 2020

England captain Ben Stokes on TMS: "It's always disappointing losing the game. We had a lot of opportunities with the bat.

"We can look back at this game and see we weren’t ruthless enough to make our batting innings count. We can look back as a batting unit and identify where to be ruthless. We put another 60, 70 or 80 runs it's a completely different game.

"It’s easy to say you can go and get 400 every time but you need moments like this as a group to understand how we progress as players. Zak Crawley played very well. For a young guy it was such a mature innings.

"We all know where we made errors with the bat. With the ball, I asked them leave everything out there for the badge and they did."

It was a polished, professional Test unit rather than a bunch of guys put together to play Test cricket for West Indies.

  9. 'Today was Blackwood's big moment'published at 18:30 British Summer Time 12 July 2020

West Indies captain Jason Holder on Jermaine Blackwood's innings: "Outstanding. I was just as disappointed as he was when he got out. That's the way he plays I guess.

"He is always a guy I can cross the field with. Today was his big moment."

The second Test begins on Thursday at Old Trafford. England will have decisions to make. They have a lot of work to do to turn this series around.

West Indies have not won a Test series in England since since 1988. Can they do it?

  11. 'I stand by the decision to bat first'published at 18:26 British Summer Time 12 July 2020

England captain Ben Stokes: "It was a very hard-fought Test match. It's always great when games can go to day five. The level of cricket played was fantastic.

"Ideally we would have liked to have got more runs in the first innings. We got ourselves into great positions at times with the bat to kick on and get 350 or 400, and we weren't ruthless enough. We didn't manage to grasp the game as we would have liked.

"I stand by the decision we made to bat first. We've got to be good enough to put first-innings runs on the board."

Simon Dobson: Fine Test match. Great to have it back, well done all concerned. Congrats West Indies. First innings set up. Ideal result for a good series. Changes for England? Denly stands aside for Root, Foakes in for Buttler. Then pick your bowlers...

West Indies need to back it up in the next Test. Even if they don't win the next two, if they perform well then I'll be very, very happy.

West Indies pace bowler Shannon Gabriel, who took 4-62 and 5-75: "I'm still a bit stiff but thankfully there are a couple of days to recover.

"Coming here, the guys were confident after we played them in the Caribbean, that we could get the job done."

  15. Man of the match - Shannon Gabrielpublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 12 July 2020

Shannon Gabriel is named man of the match. He took nine wickets in the match.

    A fair decision.

  16. 'I missed the Barmy Army'published at 18:16 British Summer Time 12 July 2020

West Indies captain Jason Holder on TMS: "I'm really happy. The boys have worked hard and it's good to see it pay off.

"I'm happy that Gabriel came back well and Blackwood too. They put their hands up and led the charge.

"It was a nerve-wracking start after losing quick three wickets and Campbell to injury. But Roston and Jermaine put on a good partnership and settled the nerves. From there we could build on.

"I missed the Barmy Army. But it was a level playing field without the crowds. It's been a good start back to international cricket, it sets the series up quite nicely."
