As Nasser has just pointed out on Twitter, he averages 9.17 on this ground, so this is comfortably his best moment in Manchester.

(Highest score of 16, by the way.)

On a flat-ish pitch you've got to take your chances.

  3. WI 49-1published at 17 overs

Crawley and Stokes have a high five without making eye contact, which I'm a huge fan of.

Poor Chris Woakes then watches his final ball of the over get tickled down the leg side for four. He's got a wry grin on his face.

Stokes will have seen Crawley's hand come across.

  5. dropped catch

Joseph dropped on 19published at 16.4 overs

    OH!

Alzarri Joseph should be a goner! A bit of extra bounce from Chris Woakes and Joseph just fends at it. It's flying straight to second slip, where Ben Stokes is ready, and third slip Zak Crawley, for some reason, decides to leap in front of Stokes with one hand outstretched. That momentary movement gets in Stokes' eyeline and throws him off, and the ball thuds into his hands before hitting the turf.

  6. WI 42-1published at 16.3 overs

A thick outside edge from Alazarri Joseph as he tries to work Chris Woakes into the leg side, but it beats the lurking gully fielder and Joseph scampers through for three.

Now it's Kraigg Brathwaite who gets into a tangle, arms and legs akimbo, and a leading edge is only stopped from clattering into the boundary rope by an excellent slide from Rory Burns.

I have been played a few times when you come out in the morning and you don't get the nightwatchman early.

You get so deflated at the start of the day.

  8. WI 36-1published at 16 overs

Stuart Broad relocates his line and bowls a much tidier three balls to end the over.

It wasn't the full Harmison but it was still very wide.

  10. WI 35-1published at 15.3 overs

Alzarri Joseph gets the first run of the day with a dinky dab through backward point.

Oh, hello. Broad's come down with a case of the Gabriels. A horrible delivery just about hits the edge of the pitch and Jos Buttler has to dive across first and second slip to parry the ball and stop it rolling away for runs.

My favourite thing about Stuart Broad's headband is, he's definitely had longer hair than this. I distinctly remember shoulder length, acid blonde hair. And he didn't wear a headband then. Now, a bit of a floppy fringe, and he's the new Bjorn Borg.

And here is the man himself.

  13. WI 32-1published at 15 overs

Ooft. A lovely delivery from Chris Woakes, just shaping back in to Kraigg Brathwaite as he pokes forward with the bat.

There's a bit of extra bounce for Woakes, too, and Brathwaite hoicks himself out of the way to end a maiden.

There is a chilly edge to the wind this morning. It doesn't feel like it will swing as much.

  15. WI 32-1published at 14.1 overs

Full and clipped off the toes of Kraigg Brathwaite, straight to the man at backward square.

    And we're away!

    Here's Chris Woakes.

Nasser Hussain has just rung the bell to signal the start of play at Old Trafford.

I give him a 6/10. Plenty of enthusiasm, bit out of time, loses points for giving himself a round of applause afterwards.

Alzarri Joseph will end up being everyone's new favourite batsman by the end of the day.

    He is beyond entertaining.

    Carlos Brathwaite
West Indies all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

I had a nice chat with Alzarri. It was so refreshing.

I asked if he was trying to knock the runs off on day two when he came in as nightwatchman but he said 'I'm not going to let them bowl bad bowls to me'.

I think the batting belief is a little bit misguided!
