That was an absolute shambles. They both started running then realised it was a preposterous run, stopped, and Archer was a spectator at the non striker's end.

    Naseem continue.

A mix-up. Woakes wants one, Archer doesn't. And last thing England want or need is a run-out.

A direct hit at the striker's end and Woakes would have been gone.

  3. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Asad Shafiq...published at 14:17 British Summer Time 7 August 2020

Mohammad Amir would be my shout too, Michael.

Woakes drives Yasir through cover for a single. I'm not sure I did that Shafiq catch justice earlier, it was a very smart grab...

Shankar: Sanju Samson when he played the 2013 IPL looked a real superstar.

Michael: For me, it was Mohammad Amir in THAT Test series in England. Not since Wasim Akram had I been on the edge of my seat on a teenager's debut. Absolute class.

If England try and counter-attack, you'd say that's the best way to get the scoreboard ticking. But they also need to look at time in the game. There's still a long way to go.

  7. Eng 166-7published at 59 overs

Naseem continues and Chris Woakes plays a controlled pull down to square leg. He deserved more than just a single for that shot.

Archer has a batting average of 8.20 in Test cricket. He's better than that stat, right? He tentatively plays inside the line of another smart and tight delivery from Naseem.

The young lad looks a natural.

Yasir Shah is a streaky bowler, and when the rhythm is with him, he is dangerous. What is alarming from an English perspective is that that ball bounced and turned quickly enough to take the glove. It wasn't the bat, but the glove.

  9. Eng 164-7published at 58 overs

    Archer 3, Woakes 16

Jofra Archer is the new man in and he's off the mark with a thick outside edge for two.

Yasir completes another wicket-taking over. He was poor at times yesterday but, wow, he's bowled beautifully after lunch.

That has popped on Dom Bess and it flew off his glove. The ball was in the air for a long time and it went very square.

  11. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 57.4 overs

    Bess c Shafiq b Yasir 1 (Eng 161-7)

Spin, bounce, out. Yasir strikes again for Pakistan.

It took Bess by surprise, hit the shoulder of his bat and it is an excellent catch by Asad Shafiq at slip.

  12. Eng 161-6published at 14:05 British Summer Time 7 August 2020

Naseem Shah tucks up Chris Woakes nicely with a tight line, rising from just back of a length. And then he goes a bit fuller, angled into the off stump as Woakes manages to dig it out.

The Old Trafford groundstaff are having an afternoon kip. How many of you have introduced naps into your daily routine with all this working from home?

Dom Bess has come a long way in a short time. England like that he is up for the fight.

I just about remember when Pakistan had 14-year-old Hasan Raza making his international debut in 1996-1997. Yes, FOURTEEN!

You don't want to know what I was doing at 14.

Yasir Shah with another tidy over, just the one from it as Bess gets off the mark. The sun is beaming down in Manchester.

It was this post-lunch period yesterday when Pakistan reversed the momentum, attacking when England confusingly opted to use Joe Root in tandem with Dom Bess. The word is it was Shadab Khan, the junior partner, who told Shan Masood that it was a time to attack. Soon after, the game had turned on its head.

  17. Eng 160-6published at 55 overs

    Bess 0, Woakes 16

A scrambled single to mid-on gives Chris Woakes and England their first runs of the session.

The Pakistan fielders are as vocal now as they were on ball one of this innings.

Yasir is a streaky bowler - when the force is with him, and when everything clicks, he has Stuart Broad-like spells.

  19. Not outpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 7 August 2020

As expected, the ball was missing. A wasteful review. As you were.

  20. Pakistan reviewpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 7 August 2020

Woakes struck on the pads by Naseem Shah. Given not out. Pakistan review. I'll put my house on it that this is going down leg. I don't have a house.
