As I push my baby to sleep around the streets of suburban Chester, it's finally dawned on me. Am I the only one who thinks Shaheen Afridi bears more than a passing resemblance to Aljaz Skorjanec from Strictly?!

I'm not one for ceremonial departures - this is international sport - but if anyone deserves it Jimmy does. Anyway, it was only a couple of days ago he was dismissing Babar Azam.

Naseem Shah is limbering up. So far so good from England. Nobody move.

There's a lot of talk about Jimmy being close to the end but surely he will want to and deserves to go out in front of a full house next summer (at the earliest)? He may have been a bit off in this game but his pace has been up at 85mph which suggests he is still extremely fit.

I've mentioned this before but there's a bat signed by Virat Kohli in an Indian restaurant in Leeds city centre. The waiter couldn't tell me fast enough when I asked him whose it was.

It's not as action-packed as the brief Pakistan innings but it's brilliantly tense at Old Trafford.

Alastair Cook has stumps from Tests he's played in as the spindles on the banister of his staircase and John Lennon is wearing what looks like an MCC tie in a very famous picture of the Beatles at Plymouth Hoe.

England wouldn't mind another freebie like they got from Shaheen Afridi earlier. At the other end, Mohammad Abbas is giving the batsmen nothing to hit.

They will get Yasir into the attack quite soon if these two don't get out. They'll have Naseem from one side, Yasir from the other.

Mohammad Abbas can't believe it. How has he not got an edge on that? It's only a tiny amount of away movement but it's glorious.

  9. Eng 13-0published at 5.3 overs

There's danger for Dom Sibley here. Twice in a row he misses as Mohammad Abbas probes away.

Jack Rimmington: On the show Gladiators, they used to wear batting gloves during the duel. Hunter, Wolf and Cobra probably never picked up a bat before though.

That was a slightly awkward shot from Burns. For a moment, I thought it had ballooned off the bat and straight into the hands of gully.

Anderson may not have been at his best but he's earned the benefit of the doubt from me. He could still find his form again.

Rory Burns is no Kumar Sangakkara but he is getting through these first few overs.

Mitchell Fraser-Jones: It feels almost sacrilegious to suggest it but... I think the time for Jimmy Anderson’s retirement may be fast approaching. Anyone agree?

  14. Eng 11-0published at 4 overs

Mohammad Abbas really is something. It shouldn't work - his awkward action and medium pace - but it really does. He moves one away beyond the edge of Dom Sibley's bat.

You could probably hear the groans from the Pakistan fielders in Bolton if you listened hard enough.

I hope Sibley and Burns brought some marshmallows and a sleeping bag because I expect them to camp out on that crease all day.

This is one of the great games where every boundary, every run, can sway the balance. Obviously Pakistan are favourites but it's not completely impossible.

I don't see the problem with bowling Archer at three tailenders personally? They'd fear him more than Woakes.

A no-ball is followed by a ball down the leg side from Shaheen. Burns flicks it fine and gets four.

This has all the hallmarks of a great day.

David: Absolute chaos from England. Silverwood and Root must take blame for that. Opening with Archer totally nonsensical. Woakes and Broad was ONLY choice. Goodness knows what goes on in dressing room decisions; before start of play and during lunch break.

I'll take one of the classic V-neck jumpers too, Steph, if you come across one. Naseem Shah is lurking in the field with his jumper on and collar turned up. Pakistan look the part.

Burns gets on the front foot and adds another two.
