It's only the second time in Anderson's career that he has taken four or more wickets in his opening spell. He did so against Pakistan in 2010, when he had an opening spell of 6-17

That was also Joe Root's 122nd catch for England, he's now second on the list of England catches for non-wicketkeepers, behind Alastair Cook.

    Anderson's figures: 6.5-1-16-4.

His Test best is 7-42, picked up against West Indies at Lord's three years ago. You wouldn't bet against him going past that today, if the rain stays away...

Apparently the weather doesn't want Jimmy to get to 600 wickets just yet. Boo.

It was a delicious ball from James Anderson. Beautiful seam, beautiful action, beautiful swing. We're watching something very special here.

Very nicely taken by Root. It was one of those lovely slip catches which took ages to get there. It was a lovely height, beautiful trajectory and Anderson has a big smile on his face.

Ah, lovely bowling. This latest delivery moves away from Asad Shafiq, who never looked comfortable at the crease. He pushes, the ball finds the outside edge, and it flies to Joe Root at second slip.

It's got a bit darker above the Ageas Bowl...

The groundstaff have got coats on - never a good sign - and are waiting expectantly by the hover cover.

It's still a pitch you can bat on but you just feel that with the weight of runs on the scorecard, it erodes your will.

  10. Pak 28-3published at 12 overs

A bit leading edge-y from Asad Shafiq first up, twice getting into a tangle across his front pad and sending the ball rolling along the turf to gully.

That's more like it though, overpitched from Broad, and Asad drives it nicely for three.

I thought Anderson was absolutely brilliant. The seam position, the way the ball comes out of his hand and how he moves it both ways.

Full, on the pads, and Asad Shafiq hustles it away to get off the mark.

This is the day that Pakistan need their captain to be leading from the front, he is under a lot of scrutiny.

    Here come the players.

It'll be Asad Shafiq to join his captain, Azhar Ali, at the crease.

Interesting that Stuart Broad has been out the middle for a while, way before his team-mates, bowling at wicketkeeping coach Bruce French. Broad was picked up on the stump mic last night saying he struggled with the footholes at the Pavilion End. I reckon he's bowled a good couple of overs, only ending as the rest of the team come to the boundary edge.
