While the rain continues to fall, we have some news for you from the women's game - England have appointed former Western Australia and Tasmania pace bowler Tim Macdonald as their new senior assistant coach. More on that here.

As a captain, this is where you grab the game. You want to be one step ahead of the game, not one step behind. In that 20-minute spell before the rain, it wasn't working for Dom Bess and Jofra Archer.
But the star of the day so far is Pakistan's Babar Azam. He showed his class and talent with some beautiful batting as he reached his half-century...

Pakistan have done what they set out to do when they won the toss this morning.
But Pakistan settled down after those wickets, while England bowled far too many loose deliveries after lunch.
Opener Shan Masood has played a watchful, solid innings and is unbeaten on 45.
Although he is slightly fortunate to still be in the middle after Jos Buttler missed out on this grab behind the stumps...

Ben: James Hildreth, despite his age (35), should be brought in to bat at 3 for the next couple of years while the current young crop of top-order batsmen develop further in the County Championship. Class is permanent and the stats don't lie.
So then, back to the story of the day so far...
England's Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes pegged the tourists back with two quick wickets. Abid Ali falling for 16 and captain Azhar Ali departing for a duck...
Pak 121-2
With the delay, the smart decision to bring tea forward has been taken.
After Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first, there were a few testing times for openers Shan Masood and Abid Ali but they managed to see through the first hour or so...
If you're just joining us, there is a stoppage in play as dark clouds and rain forced the players off the field. But here's what has happened so far....

Once you start singing Babar Azam to the tune of The Beach Boys' Barbara Ann, you can't get it out of your head.

Jack Gilbert: This Pakistan team are a whole lot better than the Windies. England will have to play pretty darn well to win this series.

At times like this, as coaches, you'd be looking for a coherent strategy. Otis Gibson would be sat with the bowlers and Joe Root, for example. I don't know who is setting the field for Dom Bess.

Ollie Pope is not Ian Bell 2.0! It is an insult to Pope to compare the two. Ollie Pope in his short career has shown more bottle than 'Belly' ever did. He will score more runs when it matters than the Sherminator.

Of the two teams, England will be delighted to get off to readdress what they have delivered in this session. It's been so poor - they're asking Dom Bess to bowl a line that he would bowl on the fifth day when it's turning big. To the right-hander, he just needs to bowl some dots. He's being asked to be too aggressive.

Joe Root is pacing up and down outside the dressing room. There's the odd shake of the head as he stops to chat with coach Chris Silverwood. It wasn't England's finest hour with the ball. But with this bowling attack, all it takes is one man to step up with a quick wicket or two.

Nathan Blood: Really flat this from England. Thank god for the rain so we don’t have to watch any more of that absolute dross.

I haven't seen batting so authorative this summer, perhaps Stokes aside. Babar has looked terrific. He's put away everything that is off line and he's tormented Bess.
