WOW – this why we love county cricket so much.

This match ebbed and flowed over the course of four days and huge credit to Kent for taking it to the final session when they looked dead and buried on several occasions today.

Twice quick wickets fell to keep them in the game and keep Essex thinking.

But Champions don’t become Champions by thinking they are beaten and Sam Cook (on his 23rd birthday) and Adam Wheater got them home, although not without some nervy running.

Off to lay down in a darkened room. A great start to the Bob Willis Trophy.

  3. 15 overs to go at Trent Bridgepublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 4 August 2020

    Derbyshire (239 & 296-6) need 69 more runs to beat Nottinghamshire (324 & 279)

    Well, well.

What a contest this match has proved to be over four days.

Derbyshire still very much in with a chance of pulling off a famous win.

15 overs remaining as we move into the final hour - 69 runs needed for a Derbyshire win, four wickets for a Nottinghamshire victory.

  4. 50 runs

    50 for Fynn Hudson-Prenticepublished at 17:07 British Summer Time 4 August 2020

    Derbyshire (239 & 294-6) need 71 runs to beat Nottinghamshire (324 & 279)

Derbyshire have a real chance here now - Fynn Hudson-Prentice reaching his 50 and then hitting back-to-back boundaries.

That brings the target down to 71 runs with four wickets in hand.

It would be some result - Notts seemed to have it sewn up earlier the day.

  5. No hat-trick for Robson!published at 17:02 British Summer Time 4 August 2020

    Surrey (282 & 119-7) need 195 more runs to beat Middlesex (347-6 dec & 248-6 dec)

No such dream finish to that over for Sam Robson as the hat-trick ball is left alone outside off stump by Matt Dunn.

Robson accounted for Jordan Clark (7) and then Dan Moriarty (0) in that over to put his side three wickets away from victory.

Rikki Clarke (22 not out) the key man now for Surrey.

  6. Robson takes two in two for Middlesex!published at 17:00 British Summer Time 4 August 2020

    Surrey (282 & 119-7) need 195 more runs to beat Middlesex (347-6 dec & 248-6 dec)

Meanwhile at The Oval - Middlesex's victory hopes are reignited as Sam Robson claims two wickets in as many balls!

  7. Lancashire all out for 236published at 16:59 British Summer Time 4 August 2020

    Lancashire (322 & 226) lead Leicestershire (409-8) by 149 runs

It's a fourth wicket of the innings for Leicestershire's Ben Mike and Lancashire are all out for 226.

Ed Moulton is out for a 10-ball duck and the Foxes now need 150 to win at New Road off 17 overs.

    Too much of an ask?

  8. Essex beat Kent by two wicketspublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 4 August 2020
    Breaking

    And Essex are there!

A nail-biting conclusion to this game, but the county champions get over the line as Sam Cook turns one behind square off Hamidullah Qadri to take them to the victory target.

Essex win by two wickets as Cook (15 not out) and Adam Wheater (26 not out) add a match-winning 31 for the ninth wicket.

Kent gave it everything with the ball, but their second-innings collapse for just 112 yesterday costs them a win.

Essex open up the competition with 21 points. Kent take seven points in defeat.

My word! More drama in this game!

Kent should've had Essex nine wickets down, but the chance goes begging.

Sam Cook and Adam Wheater get in a muddle going for a run and end up in the middle side-by-side.

Throw at the striker's end misses the stumps and Sam Cook survives!

Still six more needed to win for Essex....
