Joe Root's fifty came off 58 balls, with just two boundaries. It has been a classic Root innings.

It is his 50th 50-plus score in ODI score, and he has 16 centuries.

It is his first fifty since the World Cup.

  2. 50 runs

    Eng 136-4

Yet another half-century for Joe Root, his 50th score in excess of 50 in ODIs. If you consider it's his 150th match, you'll see that's an outstanding record. From 58 deliveries. Probably England's ODI GOAT.

I can hear the first strained cries of "football's coming home".

  4. Eng 135-4published at 25 overs

    Need 51 to win

Dhananjaya Lakshan is on to bowl his fast-medium on his ODI debut. Root eases him through the covers for a couple, then adds a single to go to 49. It feels like the contest is over, but we just need to complete the match.

Inevitably the camera goes straight to Mickey Arthur, he won't be happy about that. He's chewing his sleeve at the moment.

  6. Eng 130-4published at 24 overs

    Root 45, Moeen 14

It's all gone calm in Durham, as if England have taken the sting out of this situation. Root gets up on to his toes to force through the covers for a single. The throw is too high, so they run an overthrow, and the backing up hits direct, with the deflection allowing another run. Double overthrow! I'm not sure I've ever seen that before.

Joe Root has just passed 6,000 runs in ODI cricket. He is the 62nd player in men's ODI cricket to reach the landmark, and just the second for England after Eoin Morgan.

Root has reached it in his 141st innings, which is the joint fourth fastest in terms of innings.

That's delicate from Root, who gets down low to play a reverse sweep over where slip would have been. The straight boundaries are pretty long, so they are able to hurry back for three. This England pair are quite bit football fans. Root of Sheffield United, Moeen a Liverpool supporter. Nobody's perfect.

Well done to Chamika Karunaratne for bending his back and getting it in there, but Dushmantha Chameera did all the hard work and got there actually. It passed through his hands.

It's one of those tantalising ones. Joe Root gets away with it.

It was a strange shot. Root was pulling it with both feet off the ground.

  11. dropped catch

    Close!published at 22 overs

    Eng 116-4

    A let-off for Joe Root!

A top-edged hook, played with booth feet off the ground, hangs in the air. Dushmantha Chameera comes in from long leg, gets down low, but it's on the turf. It's hard to know if it carried, but, even if it did, it would have needed something special to complete the catch.

What will frustrate Mickey Arthur is, even though the results aren't showing, they have the makings of a good team.

Chameera and Fernando, with the spin of Hasaranga looks nice. Then with Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka, there is enough there to work with.

The problem is they need everyone to fire. England only need two key ones to come off.

Earlier on I mentioned Moeen's gloves. I've just spotted he's also got matching electric blue boots. I admire the amount of thought he's given to this. Dressing from the feet up.

This is a nice window for Moeen Ali. If he can finish the game with the bat it will do him no harm.

Mickey Arthur has returned to the Sri Lanka balcony, looking much more gruntled than he did earlier. He's got Tom Moody and Grant Flower in his backroom team. I reckon those two would probably still do a job on the pitch.

  18. Eng 107-4published at 18 overs

Still the leggies of Hasaranga as Root gets right forward, then goes right back. He's so light on his feet, the Test skipper. Hasaranga has a smear of blond on top of his dark hair, like someone has dunked him in paint. There are a couple of fans trying to get the singing going.

I wasn't expecting it to have pitched that far outside leg. It was a good decision from Tim Robinson.

Pitched outside leg. By some distance.

    Otherwise a decent shout...
