The fifty partnership came up in 14 overs.

To highlight how important it is if England had taken two wickets when the eighth wicket fell, they would have needed to score at 2.4 an over to win.

If India were to lose two wickets in this over, the required rate would be 3.47.

What all of this does show, is this day five pitch is still good enough to bat on bar the odd ball. England will need to go at a decent rate, though.

James Anderson drops one in short and Jasprit Edge is struck on the helmet and India run the byes. A quick check by the medical team to see if he's okay.

You have to give India so much credit. England's tactics have been all over the place but India have that inner belief, strength and competitive nature.

They knew they had to win the first hour and morning session and they have won it convincingly.

Mohammed Shami has played an innings he'll certainly remember in a stand worth 50 with Jasprit Bumrah. This was a fine stroke.

This is a relatively straightforward chance at slip. Root's mind might be elsewhere.

Jasprit Burmah nicks off to Moeen Ali but Joe Root is unable to claim the grab at first slip. He doesn't pick up the line quickly enough and it drops under his hands.

I would love to know the think tank of the team - how they went from getting Rishabh Pant and Ishant Sharma and then all of a sudden they thought 'lets spread the field'.

They got emotionally attached with the bouncers and there was a bit of a confrontation. You've got to take that to one side when you are a playing high-level sport. You can't get attached and in that emotion.

It was like schoolboy cricket. It is what happens in under-15 cricket - you get a bit riled because one of the opposition players has chirped your player. You storm out. Control your emotions and deliver your skill.

A beautiful roll of the wrists by Mohammed Shami, as he turns the ball into the leg side and it races away for four through the mid-wicket region. It was aerial but it was over Jonny Bairstow.

Joe Root has hands on his head.

England's tactics have been ridiculous. It is easy sat up here, and captaincy is generally your own opinion, but it has been all over the place this morning.

I can't get my head around the fact that England are bowling to Jasprit Bumrah, who averages three in Test match cricket, without a slip. Mark Wood was bowling 90mph and they don't have a slip. They had seven fielders on the boundary to Bumrah.

That can't be right. You just bowl to hit the top of off stump and create a little bit of suspicion with your field to the tailenders, because they are not that good.

Jasprit Bumrah plays a textbook defensive shot to Sam Curran, holds the pose for the snappers, then decides to looks up and sees Mohammed Shami is halfway down the pitch demanding he end his attempt at 'blue steel' and actually take the run.

James Anderson is back, Bumrah on strike.

Joe Root: great batsman, terrible captain. England have totally let India off the hook since drinks.

I can't be the only person hugely frustrated that the pace bowlers aren't trying to hit the stumps against tailenders? You miss... we hit!

I'm having mixed emotions. I'm enjoying Mohammed Shami batting like this, but why doesn't he do it more often!?!

It has been really impressive to see how he has controlled his instincts. He has batted with a lot of responsibility.

Moeen Ali continues but Mohammed Shami whacks his third ball through the covers for four with real panache. That was a proper cricket shot.

India will be thinking about getting a few more runs. Virat Kohli won't be thinking about the declaration yet, maybe another 20 runs or so.

Sam Curran finds the shoulder of Jasprit Bumrah's bat with one that lifts off a length and it goes over the slip cordon. He moves on to 20 not out.

Are we at the stage where India will think about declaring?
