From there it all went wrong.

Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah have put on an unbroken 77 for the ninth wicket to give India a 259-run lead at lunch.

England spread the field, leading to Michael Vaughan calling their tactics "schoolboy" and Aggers "woeful".

The day started well for England...

    Thanks Timothy.

I didn't necessarily expect England to win this morning, but I thought that might be because of Rishabh Pant or their batting deficiencies. I didn't expect people to be questioning Joe Root's and England's tactics with the ball.

If you're an England fan, strap yourself in. The next five hours or so could be a tough watch.

I can't imagine Joe Root will have much of an appetite during lunch. However, I'm ravenous so I'm going to grab a quick bite to eat.

My esteemed colleague Callum Matthews will guide you through the rest of the interval and the afternoon session.

There is something in India's players meeting the two batters in the Long Room as they came off at lunch. Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli will have said 'let's all go and meet them, greet them, and make sure the England team see us'.

India have just produced an incredible hour and a half of cricket. They are a team that is high in class. They knew they had to win that period after they lost Rishabh Pant and that is what really good teams do. They find a way of staying in the game and then grabbing the game.

This was possibly the champagne moment of the morning for India fans. Superb from Mohammed Shami.

Virat Kohli will have enough runs to be attacking with his fields. I wonder if he will declare at lunch or if he'll send these two out to swing for a couple more overs. He'll want to completely nullify England's chances of winning.

There's 64 overs left in the day. Will Virat Kohli declare at lunch?

That is the word, Aggers. Basics. The best sports teams, around the world, manage to deliver the basics when the pressure is on. England didn't know what the basics were this morning.

Generally you go plan A, B, C - England went to plan X to Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami within the first 20 balls.

India have distracted England and got them off the basics that you have to do when bowling at tailenders.

John: Utter rubbish today. Why aren't the senior players telling the bowlers to just bowl as they had been? Sad thing is this England team never seem to learn from past mistakes.

Jon Gill: The whole England team should be fined 40% of fees for that last hour of cricket alone. Utterly disgusting.

Jasprit Bumrah dabs one into the ground from Moeen Ali and it rolls through slip. India take a single. Mohammed Shami blocks the final ball of the over.

    That's lunch.

Bumrah gives his team-mate a tap on the back before the pair of them break out into smiles walking up the steps of the pavilion. They receive plenty more slaps on the back and high fives as they get into the dressing room.
