Jarleth Eaton: The embarrassment of riches that England have at Test level is remarkable. No Pope, Burns, Stokes or Archer on the tour, and they look comfortable against an albeit poor Sri Lanka. They’re a world-class spinner away from being competitive everywhere.

For a man playing his first Test innings, Lawrence has looked very impressive indeed.

Three singles for England. It's all very, very easy.

Two overs till the new ball.

England have been excellent in their mindset, the skill levels have been very good - especially with the bat - and the captain is leading from the front.

Shot! Joe Root has played the sweep superbly in this innings. Admittedly this is one from a full toss but he absolutely crunches it to the fence.

Wanindu Hasaranga bowled another no ball in that over. Pack it in, man.

    That'll be drinks - undoubtedly England's 70-minute period. Again.

We're almost at the stage where Sri Lanka are just going to have match their first-innings total of 135 just to make England bat again.

A lot of the England players not involved in this game - James Anderson, Olly Stone for example - are in the nets. Jimmy is sweating.

  10. dropped catch

Lawrence dropped on 60published at 75 overs

    Eng 255-3

Tough! But a chance for Sri Lanka.

Dan Lawrence tries to turn it into the on side but gets a leading edge that loops up - and Kusal Mendis at second slip gets his hands up above his head, makes contact, but the ball pops through them.

    That could be costly.

For Lawrence, there's no guarantee that a hundred will keep him in the side.

This is a great chance.Joe Root, go and get your double; Dan Lawrence, get your hundred. Make it count.

Maybe a first bit of good fortune for Dan Lawrence as he skews one through mid-wicket - it was ariel but found the gap between the two fielders.

I know it's Sri Lanka, and they aren't the best, but Lawrence has looked comfortable and at home on debut.

That is the record partnership for England for any wicket at Galle - beating the 114 Root and Bairstow put on in this match.

  15. Eng 248-3published at 73 overs

    Lead by 113

That's lovely from Joe Root! He gets down on one knee and sweeps away to the square leg fence. He's played that shot really well in this innings.

The partnership is up to 117 now.

England are running away with this. They're piling on the agony.

  17. Eng 242-3published at 72 overs

It would be a nice start to the winter if Joe Root was to double up, wouldn't it? He's already got three in his career - against Sri Lanka at Lord's in 2014, Pakistan at Old Trafford 2016 and New Zealand in Hamilton in 2019.

Dan Lawrence has looked good all round the wicket, but particularly strong through point, as he plays a lovely delicate cut for another boundary.

England are in complete and utter control.

Andy Lutwyche: Those talking about “the rules” of cricket need to do some homework. Competitions have rules, the sport has laws. I got my final ever yellow card in football for pointing this out to a referee who told me to “learn the rules”; retired almost immediately after that.

Joe Root moves to 115 with a single, before Wanindu Hasaranga bowls a no-ball...

    Yes, he is a spinner.

There's nine overs to the new ball. Sri Lanka are going to need to make significant inroads with that.

  20. Postpublished at 08:21 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2021

A double change for Sri Lanka as Wanindu Hasaranga - who has taken 0-46 from 11 overs so far - is back into the attack.
