The captain performing takes any pressure off. He's always the first one to be scrutinised.

What a great start for Root with this extravaganza of cricket coming up.

Joe Root's first century since November 2019 was slightly overshadowed by Mickey's nightmare after it but here's some reaction...

Just to make the whole Mickey Arthur thing worse - he threw his water bottle to the floor and then brought out the teapot. He genuinely thought that was out. Worrying.

The century partnership is up between these two, in just over 26 overs, and England's lead is approaching three figures.

Lawrence has looked completely at home. He will be absolutely delighted. What a feeling.

That's a great moment for Dan Lawrence.

A half-century on debut for Dan Lawrence!

He does it with consummate ease down the ground and he doesn't even realise he's brought it up.

The England dressing room starts applauding, he looks up at them, and then realises.

He wants this to just be the start.

That just straightened. It would have been a big shout for lbw had Dan Lawrence not got some under edge on it.

Lasith Embuldeniya has bowled nicely for Sri Lanka. He gets another one to grip, and turn away from Dan Lawrence, which Niroshan Dickwella ends up taking at chest height away to his right.

Lawrence under-edges a sweep for two, before a couple of singles through the covers. He's up to 48 on debut.

His footwork has been excellent so far.
