Stuart Broad is up for this. He extends his follow through, puffs out his cheeks and stares Angelo Mathews down.

That's a beauty again. It's going in towards Mathews, before hitting the seam and moving away, leaving Mathews hopping around on the crease, turned inside out. The double teapot is out from Broad.

A third successive maiden from Broad.

If Sri Lanka can manage to bat 50 more overs, at three an over, that would give them a lead of around 120 - with England to bat a few tricky overs tonight...

Niroshan Dickwella brings out the hard sweep this time and absolutely crunches it to the mid-wicket fence.

Dom Bess looks unhappy and wants to change his field. Joe Root stands their arms folded, as if to say "get on with it, Dom".

CLOSE! Dickwella brings out the sweep again, fine this time, and it just loops over the head of Jonny Bairstow at short fine leg for three. That's a let off.

If England could get six wickets by the time Sri Lanka knock this deficit off, that would be their goal.

Angelo Mathews sees out another Stuart Broad over. That may be Sri Lanka's plan. Broad has been by far England's most accurate bowler so it may well be a case of just seeing him off.

In the last over Jos Buttler was shouting "just one mistake lads, they are just one mistake away". England want to be patient and disciplined.

    A beauty from Stuart Broad.

He square Angelo Mathews up, has him on his toes, having a little prod outside off stump, but unfortunately for England it just slides past the outside edge.

England can lose a couple of hours and still win the Test match, so the pressure is still on Sri Lanka.

Niroshan Dickwella is naturally quite aggressive and I can't see him reining that in too much to be honest.

He attempts a slog sweep and clothes it a but. Joe Root looks quite happy for him to take that option at the moment.

A maiden first up from Broady.

England are working hard on the ball - trying their best to rough up one side, shine the other - in the hope of getting a little bit of reverse swing.

No sign of it at the moment.

If Sri Lanka can just get one more substantial partnership, it could make things very tricky for England.

Dom Bess, who is covered in suncream, really enjoyed that wicket. You could tell there was a lot of pent up frustration let out.

He drops a tad short to allow Niroshan Dickwella to work it off the back foot to get off the mark.

It's a really good delivery. It pitches outside off stump and Chandimal was expecting it to turn more. The perfect start for England, and a big boost for Dom Bess because it's one of the few wickets in this game where he has bowled the batsman out.

    Chandimal c Root b Bess 20 (SL 243-5)

    What a start for England!

Dom Bess had started well, getting one to bounce and rear up at Angelo Mathews, and is a good length and line at Dinesh Chandimal.

Bess gets the stand-in captain forward, on the front foot, and the ball just goes on with the arm. It's an excellent low catch by Joe Root at slip.

    "Comeeee on", screams Bess.
