The groundstaff are ready...

Mark Wood looks pretty weary and I can't say that I blame him. He is hurtling in.

Oh! Angelo Mathews doesn't play that short ball as well as he did in the last over. It's dug in, around rib height, by Mark Wood and Mathews sort of just fends it round the corner. Probably would have been a relatively simple catch for a leg slip. Mathews grimaces as he jogs through for a single.
The groundstaff are hovering on the boundary rope.

Root already looks like our most dangerous spinner.

England have toiled and toiled and their spinners just haven't been able to find the right lines.

That's a lovely delivery from Joe Root as he gets one to spin and bounce past Niroshan Dickwella's defensive push. That's a rarity at the moment.
Weather wise it's glistening sunshine from one angle, while the wind is picking up and the clouds are getting darker in another. Who knows what may hit the ground.

Dan is right - there are some filthy, thick black clouds over Galle.
England are going to their 'Ben Stokes' plan for Angelo Mathews. Mark Wood is digging it in short, from around the wicket, but Mathews plays it nicely.

There is an enormous cloud bubbling up in the background at Galle.

The arm wrestle continues. No-one is giving an inch at the moment.

England need something here. The second ball is 28 overs old now, and is starting, if it hasn't already, to go soft.
Sri Lanka take three singles off Joe Root's second over. Angelo Mathews is on 37 off 140 balls - a strike-rate of 26.43. Dogged.

That started wide and it was a cutter, so it carried on going away from the bat. Dickwella hadn't had anything wide for a while and he threw his hands at it.

This is a good indication of how slow this pitch is. Mark Wood is bowling at almost 90mph - with the odd cutter thrown in - and Niroshan Dickwella has just taken a guard that is a good yard or two out of the popping crease.
Dickwella has a loose, airy fairy drive at one of Wood's cutters but again he misses.
England have beaten the bat a fair few times in this session.

This doesn't feel like the game it was going to be for England.

Joe Root is starting around the wicket, firing it into the pads of Angelo Mathews.
There's an appeal for lbw but umpire Kumar Dharmasena signals it was going down leg. Root has a chat with Jos Buttler but decides they agree.
A maiden to start.
Joe Root is going to have a bowl.
I've got a hunch he may pick up a wicket here (apologies in advance when he doesn't).

Sri Lanka have really applied themselves. It's difficult with England's bowlers - Bess has looked better in this session and the wicket was nice, but overall the consistency is still lacking.

We've seen so many misfields in this game. It's a hot afternoon in Galle.

That's a beauty from Mark Wood. He goes to the off-cutter and beats Niroshan's Dickwella drive. Jos Buttler, who has been very tidy behind the stumps, does well to gather cleanly on the bounce too.
The double teapot is out again. That is woeful fielding from Dom Bess to be fair. Dickwella drives to point, but with no real force, and Bess running/sliding around makes a hash of it and sends it towards the cover boundary allowing Sri Lanka to pick up a couple. Sloppy.
That'll be drinks too.
