A maiden from Jack Leach. Better.

Fair play to Sri Lanka - they've put up some resistance - but you just feel with a couple of partnerships that their deficit could be etched into.

You really appreciate the sustained pressure that Graeme Swann could create when he played for England. Both Bess and Leach so far have bowled the odd good ball, but there's no follow-up, nothing to just stop the batsman nabbing a single here and there.

  4. SL 190-3published at 72.1 overs

Dom Bess serves up a full toss to Lahiru Thirimanne and it gets worked for the easiest of singles. He can lean on his bat, 99 runs to his name.

I'm cheap with the heating too. I have a hot water bottle to compensate. I am also very tired. The lads owe me some more wickets for being up this early.

    Thirimanne 98, Mathews 11

Close! Jack Leach finds the inside edge of Lahiru Thirimanne's bat as he comes forward in defence, but the ball deflects off the pad and loops over Zak Crawley's head at short leg.

The follow-up ball is loose, though, too loose, and Thirimanne takes the easy single on offer to get off strike. Just two more runs...

This is what Lahiru Thirimanne looked like when he last scored a Test century - on 9 March 2013. That was 2,871 days ago.

Now that's a better shot from Lahiru Thirimanne, carving a short Bess delivery through point for four. That takes him to 97 and Sri Lanka's deficit is now under 100.

He's definitely in the nervous nineties there. He hasn't played that shot, against the spin, all day.

That's a bit of luck for Thirimanne - his heart must have been in his mouth.

  11. SL 183-3published at 70.3 overs

    What is that?!

Lahiru Thirimanne, on 91, goes for the most needless of yahoos off Dom Bess, slicing the ball high into the air, and it somehow conspires to drop between three fielders in the deep.

Jack Leach has only got the one slip, and I just wonder if he should have a catcher in front to try and entice Angelo Mathews to come forward.

It looks too easy for him to rock back at the moment, especially while it's early on in his innings.

That was just too short from Jack Leach - Angelo Matthews was just able to rock back.

Jack Leach's second delivery turns and takes the edge of Angelo Mathews' bat, but it goes on the bounce to Joe Root at slip.

Oh, that's a freebie, though, too short, and it's so easy for Mathews to cut it through point for four.

Time for some double spin - Jack Leach will replace Stuart Broad.

What is England's minimum goal for when Sri Lanka knock off the deficit? Three more wickets so 286-6? That would be a minimum goal if they possibly could.

If Sri Lanka are only four down then potentially you start to get a bit fidgety as a fielding side. Especially when you've dominated the game and been so in control.

  17. SL 175-3published at 69 overs

Sri Lanka only trail England by 111 runs and they've got plenty of wickets in hand. Could be set up for quite an interesting few hours...
