  1. SL 324-8published at 124 overs

    Lead by 38

Dilruwan Perera decides he's not going to stand about and occupy an end as he dances down to his second delivery from Dom Bess and hoicks him over long-on for a one bounce four.

Shot! Angelo Mathews goes reverse sweeping and dispatches Bess through point with a furious swirl of the wrists.

Jambarrell: Can't believe all the negativity about our bowling attack. We're actually close to winning an overseas series opener! Without having any practice! With our best player resting and our best spinner in isolation! Give the guys a break!

  3. SL 315-8published at 123 overs

    Lead by 29

Jack Leach beats Angelo Mathews with the penultimate ball of the over. There's a proper spring about his step now.

  4. dropped catch

Brilliant catch and a lovely bit of bowling. It went quickly.

Leach has bowled a bit better. He has got pace, dip and bounce.

    Hasaranga c Root b Leach 12 (SL 314-8)

    Great catch!

Nice bowling from Jack Leach, drawing Wanindu Hasaranga forward, and the Sri Lanka batsman can't resist. A harrumphing drive sends a thick edge up into the air, Jos Buttler can't get there, and Joe Root, stretching to his left, gets both hands to it. Terrific reactions, and reward for better bowling from Leach since lunch.

  8. SL 313-7published at 122 overs

    Lead by 27

Lovely from Wanindu Hasaranga, rocking back to cut a short delivery from Dom Bess away through point for four.

Oh, make that four more! Hasaranga gets his bottom hand into the game and slaps Bess straight through long-off for another boundary.

That absolutely exploded. It was unplayable. No-one in the history of the game could have played that.

  10. SL 304-7published at 121 overs

Gosh! This latest delivery from Jack Leach absolutely spits off the pitch, another huge puff of dust rising up as Angelo Mathews gropes outside off stump. I'm not sure I'd fancy batting for very long on this...

Hasaranga can hang around with Mathews. I don't think Mathews will change to much. If Hasaranga goes he might have a dart.

Jack Leach will get us going after tea, figures of 2-97 to his name.

This is lovely listening on a Sunday morning, but you have to wonder how this England bowling attack can possibly take on India...

There are 39 overs left in the day, in theory - can Sri Lanka build on that slender, 16-run lead?

It has been a beautiful day and the skies are looking clear, so I'm pretty sure we'll be out there for at least another hour, hour and a half.

    Thanks, Callum.

Well. That session was drifting until those two quick wickets from England, who bowled with much better control.

That was a much better session by England.

Stuart Broad and Mark Wood were able to build pressure, and Dom Bess and Jack Leach were much more consistent.

England took three wickets, and conceded just 60 in that 135-minute session.

It's been a frustrating day for England but they can see a little bit of light now.
