Fernando is only looking to survive but he is succeeding. This is very frustrating for England.

Macca Gaunt: As much as it hasn’t offered much for Leach and Bess, they haven’t kept it tight! The next two spinners we have are Ali and Parkinson, both haven’t played a red ball game for club/country since 2019!

  3. SL 376-9published at 137.4 overs

Curran has two balls at Asitha Fernando...

Perera played that beautifully. A little bonus for Sri Lanka.

Oh that's nice from Dilruwan 'Mahela' Perera. Wood goes for a yorker but the right-hander guides the ball down to the third man boundary.

    Perera keeps the strike too.

Sri Lanka will be more than happy with this now.

  8. SL 369-9published at 136.1 overs

    Mark Wood continues...

He has protection out on the leg side. Perera smacks the ball out to one of those fielders and the batsmen turn down the single.

  9. SL 369-9published at 136 overs

    Perera 56, Fernando 0

The cameras are zooming in on Jimmy Anderson, as if to suggest he needs to ask Joe Root for the ball to finish this off. Fernando survives all six deliveries from Curran.

  10. SL 369-9published at 135.3 overs

Left-armer Sam Curran is bowling round the wicket but it has been too wide so far. Fernando has been able to watch two of the balls in the over go by.

It won't be Dom Bess. He has been taken out of the attack. Joe Root turns to Sam Curran.

Paul McCready: Not to be too pessimistic, but England never do well batting second after a 300+ total by the opposition do they? When was the last time England surpassed a 1st innings score of 450?

Dilruwan Perera ducks under a bouncer so Bess will have an over at number 11 Fernando.

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

There have only been three instances since April 2008 of seamers taking all 10 wickets in an innings in Asia. Most recently was in 2019, when India skittled Bangaldesh.

For it to happen in Sri Lanka you have to go back to 1994, when Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram skittled Sri Lanka for 91 in an unbroken stint for Pakistan.

  15. SL 369-9published at 134.5 overs

One ball left in the over. Wood needs to keep Perera down that end. For some reason Root hasn't brought the field up.

  17. SL 369-9published at 134.1 overs

My word. Perera dazzles with a flamboyant flick off the pads. The England fielders hardly move. Four.

Dom Bess has got a real stinger on the hand but that was a caught and bowled chance. Oh dear...

  19. SL 365-9published at 134 overs

    Perera 52, Fernando 0

It looks like it's Bess left-hand - his non-bowling hand - that took the brunt of the blow. He did get both hands to the catch, though - low down between his legs. Catchable but tough.

Fernando sees off his first two balls.

  20. dropped catch

Perera dropped on 51published at 133.4 overs

Perera drills the back back down the pitch and Dom Bess puts down a tough caught and bowled chance.

    It has hurt him too.
