Joe Root has played and missed. That may be the first time today.

It's a good bouncer from Suranga Lakmal. Root tentatively tries to pull but misses.

A ball later he's struck on the pad. Sri Lanka appeal but umpire Dharmasena indicates it's too high.

England have to get to parity, or as near as. They need this partnership to grow more than it has already.

  3. Eng 194-4published at 60 overs

    Root 113, Buttler 34

    A good point from Adam.

Root gets off strike with a single again. He has done that so well in this innings. Another sweep gives him one more at the end of the over.

Adam Davies: Root averages 60 at four or five. By being unselfish, and exposing himself at three in England, his average has dropped. Something I don't think Kohli would do for example. Now he's back at four you can see he's a lot more comfortable. When he wins the Ashes, he will be back in.

A change of bowling. Off-spinner Dilruwan Perera replaces Embuldeniya.

Rob Nield: Jos Buttler is arguably England’s second best batsmen in this line up. He’s ‘in’ now too.

That's another good over from Suranga Lakmal. He's keeping Buttler tied down.

That was the first explosion off the pitch for the seamer. There was a big bit of dust came up.

Yes, although Babar's failure to get a century last summer in England is a blot of his copybook.

Sri Lanka get excited when Buttler chips a drive back towards Lakmal but it falls safely.

I think there's a guy playing for Pakistan who'd make a pretty convincing case for being the fourth member if there's a 'Fab Four'.

The TV company are getting full use of their drone again today. We've had an aerial shot of Galle after every over.

    It's making me jealous.

It's too easy for the batsmen to knock the ball around into the gaps.

Root does a bit of gardening midway through Embuldeniya's second over after lunch. The pitch is holding together nicely so far with little dramatic turn on offer. The sun is beating down on it again today, mind.

    Three singles from the over.

Lakmal hasn't got any wickets but his 10 overs have only cost 16 runs, and the ball is doing nothing for the seamers.

    Root 108, Buttler 33

Seamer Suranga Lakmal, collar turned up, is running in again. He bowls an accurate maiden to Jos Buttler. The England wicketkeeper has played at a good tempo today, his 33 coming from 56 balls.

England cannot afford one of those really bad sessions. If they do, then they've lost this Test match.

Agreed. Steve Smith has obviously dominated series against England. Kohli has done so in Australia and against England. For me, Root needs to do the same this year to be in the same bracket as those two in particular.

Root's 'Fab Four' position depends on how he performs against India and Australia this year.

Sweeping again, Root collects two after sending the ball out into the leg side. Sri Lanka have the field spread far and wide to the England skipper.

There's a little bit more company for Buttler and one or two yelps when he inside edges the ball through his legs for three. The Nat Meg.

The game, and the series, is really in the balance.
