Summary

  • Root bats all day for 186 - run out from last ball

  • Root now fourth on all-time England Test runs list after passing Pietersen & Gower

  • Buttler (55) and Bess (32) offer stoic support to Root

  • Sri Lanka spinner Embuldeniya takes seven wickets

  • Second Test, day three, Galle, England 1-0 up in two-match series

  1. Eng 181-4published at 55 overs

Root and Buttler leisurely wander to the middle. England will be desperate for them to start again in this afternoon session and bat long.

Unsurprisingly, Lasith Embuldeniya, who has taken all four wickets, will begin with the ball.

Joe Root has had a good break from the game and he's been practising hard. He'd have been honest and said to the mangement that one of his issues is not converting 50s into 100s. England win if Joe is a real powerhouse with the batting. He's probably worked with someone to work out how he can always be in the here and now, and get into that rhythm. He has obviously found something and it's worked.

If anyone can deliver similar to a freezing cold live-texter's flat in Leeds that would be lovely.

The afternoon session will begin any moment now.

England are a long way behind and we know this pitch will get worse on day four and five. They have to bat the day out.

Root hasn't swept quite as much as last night today but he's still done it a lot. He's played predominately on the leg side in this innings.

He did hit one switch-hit sweep for four that was, quite frankly, ridiculous.

I've been slightly surprised Sri Lanka haven't changed their fields to Joe Root.

I'm going to be controversial here and say Root had indeed dropped out of the 'Fab Four'. I'm not certain he was ever in it. Whether runs against Sri Lanka are enough to say he is back up with Williamson, Smith and Kohli I'm not sure.

    It's a talking point...

It would appear Root has taken offence to the suggestion that he's no longer in the 'Fab 4'.

Joe Root has been absolutely brilliant this morning. He has progressed from 67 overnight to 105, reaching a second century in as many Tests.

But at the other end, England are still struggling.

Jonny Bairstow added only four runs to his score before falling to Lasith Embuldeniya. Sri Lanka's left-arm spinner also had Dan Lawrence caught at slip for three. Embuldeniya has all four wickets.

Jos Buttler survived a scare when given out lbw but he is not out on 30 in a crucial partnership with Root.

England are 181-4 at lunch, 200 runs behind.

Lee: Huge innings for Buttler this, he really need to put in a shift today and support his skipper & team.

For all of Root's brilliance England are still up against it in this match.

They are still 200 behind Sri Lanka's first-innings score.

Sam Curran is due in next. He hasn't scored a fifty in 21 innings.

Kumar Sangakkara has just said on Sky Root's innings has been one of the best he's seen by a visiting batsman in Sri Lanka.

    He's been that good.

153 balls. 105 runs. Not a chance for the bowlers.

It has been a pretty even session. England did well to regroup after the loss of Bairstow and Lawrence. Embuldeniya gets a jaffa out of nowhere but apart from that it is fairly placid.

Joe Root is playing a different game to everyone else. He is making it look ridiculously easy.

    Thanks Amy.

I must admit this has been a difficult morning for me. My neighbour decided it was a good night to play music rather loudly until 5am.

But it has been made a whole lot easier by watching this man bat...

Up and about at this hour on a Sunday for work as well as the cricket, two below freezing and sat in the car waiting for it to defrost. All the talk of how warm it is in Galle makes it feel that touch colder...

England trail Sri Lanka by exactly 200 runs, thanks to a magnificent century from captain Joe Root.

Root walks off with 105 to his name, while Jos Buttler is unbeaten on 30.
