Sri Lanka haven't really changed their tactics to Root. It's a bit disappointing. He's obviously in the best form you can be in. You'd like to think something had been discussed.

  2. Eng 116-2published at 35.1 overs

Four! Lasith Embuldeniya drops short and gets thunderously pulled to the fence by Joe Root.

Joe Root is in a very good mood. He has just given the short-leg fielder a little fist pump, he has been talking to Dickwella. He is making all sorts of new friends.

  4. Eng 111-2published at 35 overs

Ouch. Joe Root hammers a sweep into the poor fielder at short leg and then fist-bumps him in apology. Kusal Mendis took an absolute battering off Root in that position in the first Test.

Jacob Hodgkinson: 15 years ago the Monkeys smashed that album out, and 15 years ago England drew 1-1 away in India with Collingwood caning it. I'll take that again in both cases. Nothing like nostalgia, is there...

Bairstow bludgeoned that. He didn't quite time it.

  7. Eng 110-2published at 34 overs

Jonny Bairstow's had enough of this defending malarkey. He skips down the pitch to Dilruwan Perera and absolutely hammers the ball back past him for four, causing Joe Root to duck for safety at the non striker's end.

That hit Root miles outside the line.

  9. Eng 104-2published at 33 overs

Niroshan Dickwella might have the greatest appeal game going, but he's an absolutely terrible judge of anything. He spends a long time appealing for an lbw against Joe Root that pitched at least a foot outside the line. The 100 partnership is up between this.

Ross: Nice, calm and boring early morning please England.

  11. Eng 104-2published at 32 overs

Joe Root takes a massive stride forward and tickles yet another sweep fine for one, while Jonny Bairstow defends his first ball of the over.

Galle is looking particularly beautiful this morning, it has to be said.

Lasith Embuldeniya, who dismissed both openers yesterday, will get things going from the opposite end.

That is a tiny deflection if there was one.

  14. Eng 103-2published at 31 overs

Ooft. Joe Root goes down to sweep his third ball of the day and ends up under-edging it past his stumps and between Dickwella's legs for four. That was perilously close to his off stump...

Sri Lanka must come out and change their plan to Joe Root. They can't allow him to keep sweeping. Whether they bowl slower or do it with field placings, they have to have thought about it overnight.

  16. Eng 98-2published at 30.1 overs

Joe Root works the first ball of the day down to mid-on, but can't take a single as the close fielder advances.

I didn't realise this is Joe Root's 99th Test match. You sometimes forget how long he's been around.

Anyway, he's out in the middle, scratching at his guard, and it'll be Dilruwan Perera to bowl at him first up.

A big, big day for England. They will hope it will be played by Joe Root who is playing as well as you can in the sub-continent.
