It has been a really interesting morning. The pitch is still predominantly flat but the surface is going now.

I thought Ben Stokes' innings was absolutely brilliant. He was a bit spooked by the left-armer into the rough but he took him on.

England have just got to keep going. There is so much time in Test cricket but people are just impatient these days.

You've taken that very well, Jamie.

A quiet over from Ishant takes us to drinks. The question now is can I get to the kitchen, find some cereal, pour the milk and get back to my sofa before the next delivery. I'm hoping for yes...

My favourite Joe Root moment was his 200 against Sri Lanka... was at the ground with my GF (now wife) and the camera panned in on her going crazy - social media thought she was Joe's GF!

Duncan Ward: In 2016 Joe Root made 1477 Test runs, his most ever in a year. He's already got 596 and it's 5th February. Mohammed Yousuf holds the record with 1788 in a year which is well with Root's grasp to beat.

  7. Eng 399-4published at 131 overs

    Root 174, Pope 5

Richabh Pant has upped the noise levels behind the stumps since the stokes wicket. He's enthused by a shimmy down the pitch from Ollie Pope. Pope turns to the India wicketkeeper and grins after scurrying back to make his ground.

Personally, I don't think I'd have criticised KP for a dismissal like Stokes' today. If he got out doing that in his first 20 balls, yes. When he's already bashed the ball around the ground and is closing on a hundred, no. Just my view.

Spinner Nadeem has bowled yet another no-ball which is signalled by a very rowdy siren.

Callum: Fantastic innings from Stokesy once more, however I feel reaction to someone like Kevin Pietersen getting out playing that shot would’ve been very, very different from the commentary team. What’s the difference?

  10. Eng 395-4published at 130 overs

India are bowling very straight to Pope and have three fielders blocking gaps on the leg side.

Currently, I can hardly hear the TV for the rain bouncing off the windows of our flat. No such problems in Chennai. It's hot.

Chris Balding: My favourite Joe Root moment is that cheeky smile and thumbs-up during the Ashes when he took a catch in the famous Australian collapse of 60 all out.

  12. Eng 395-4published at 129.2 overs

Joe Root, playing his 100th Test, continues to trundle along in a way that is becoming pleasingly common.

Let's go back to reminiscing on some of your favourite Root memories...

Nadeem needed that wicket of Stokes to help his figures. He has 1-126 from 31 overs.

The left-armer almost nabs a second when Pope sweeps and misses.

Your alarm just gone off? You've missed quite a lot.

England resumed on 263-3 and it was an intense start with Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin bowling well for India but Joe Root and Ben Stokes dug deep on a pitch that showed signs of extra spin and bounce today.

Ben Stokes has just got out for 82. caught at fine leg, looking to sweep Shahbaz Nadeem but it was brilliant attacking innings from the left-hander. He was dropped on 31 and 32, but he swept and reverse swept superbly and hit three sixes in his 118-ball stay.

Joe Root has moved past 150 for the third match in succession, and he's joined by Ollie Pope who is playing his first Test since dislocating his shoulder against Pakistan in August.

England just want to keep batting - Root spoke about wanting 600-700 at close on day one.

  15. Eng 393-4published at 128 overs

    Root 170, Pope 4

Jasprit Bumrah has bowled more yorkers in this innings than I've ever seen one bowler bowl in a Test. He's the best in the world at it but this one is a little off target.

He then squares Pope up completely with a brilliant delivery. It sounded like an edge but it seems the ball flicked pad.

Tonks: Enjoyed his innings but Stokes has just given his wicket away there big time. 100 was looming.

Ian Smith: Just jinxed Ben Stokes by trying to work out on a spreadsheet at what point he would catch up with Joe Root. Sorry.

  17. Eng 392-4published at 127 overs

    Root 169, Pope 4

Pope gets off the mark with a streaky cut shot that runs down to third man for four. The India fielders were interested in a catch for a while.

What to make of that Stokes dismissal? Yes it looks bad but he had been so good because he had been attacking. You can't praise him for hitting brilliant, aggressive shots and then criticise him when it goes wrong.

That bounced a little bit on Ben Stokes and it spun a bit.

If anything Stokes got down a bit too early. It was a great innings but he'll disappointed not to get a century.

That will teach us for fantasising.

Cheteshwar Pujara looked pretty glad he held onto that in the end. Club cricketers will be familiar with the catch between the groin.
