If anyone tries to tell me that they thought England would get the to stage Rohit Sharma was bowling to give the weary bowlers a rest I'll tell you you're lying.

On comes the part-time offie, who has two Test wickets. Four singles.

Daniel Seal: Anyone still worried about Root's conversion rates?

Kate: Now Root has his double century, brought up in some style I might add - I can now make the bacon sandwich I’ve been dreaming of - dripping with butter and oozing with tomato sauce (hangover fuel).

  3. 'Root has grown as a leader'published at 08:30 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2021

Former England captain on the Cricket Social

Since Chris Silverwood has been in charge of the team as coach, England have played the right kind of style for Test cricket and Joe Root has led the team perfectly, because of that style.

I've always felt Root reads the game well and is tactically astute. As a leader, you can see in the last year he's grown. The way he talks about his game, the way he talks about his captaincy and what he wants to achieve.

  4. Eng 445-4published at 144 overs

    Root 204, Pope 20

This is Root's fifth double hundred in Tests. Only Wally Hammond has more for England. Hammond's doubles came a very long time ago.

This has been billed as the defining year of Joe Root's career. He's absolutely smashing it.

  5. 'Superb' Rootpublished at 08:28 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2021

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on the Cricket Social

It's a good wicket, no question about that, but you put into the equation the opposition and the heat. For Root to concentrate at this kind of tempo, to keep batting and batting without looking like he takes any kind of rest, is superb.

  7. Eng 440-4published at 143 overs

    Root 202, Pope 17

Root gets a big ovation from the dressing room. His celebration, while clearly full of delight, is understated.

    228, 186, 202* - he's getting used to this.

    Brought up with a six!

Joe Root beams with a smile bright enough to light up a miserable day in the UK.

He's in the form of his life.

  9. Eng 431-4published at 142 overs

    Root 194, Pope 16

Nadeem begs for an lbw and looks around in disbelief when Pope isn't given out. He wants a review but India don't have any left.

Pope got a big inside edge anyway.

  10. Eng 431-4published at 141.3 overs overs

The combination of Rishabh Pant and Joe Root in the 190s is not good for my heart rate. I take my eyes off the screen to type and Pant screams, suggesting there may be a run-out chance. Like with those before, Root and Pope are safely in.

I'm not going to say Joe Root is cruising to 200 but...

Stuart Mitchell: I've said previously (before the Aussie series) I don't think Virat is the best captain for India, despite being their best player. From what I've seen of Rahane, I don't think he would have reviewed at least 2 of the 3 that India have lost.

    Root 192, Pope 15

Root and Pope are intent on taking this quick singles. Again, Pant gets excited behind the stumps but Pope's burst of speed gets him home once more.

Root seems to be breathing a little heavily but is not troubled.

Stop it, Joe. That's just too good. Root nabs the cheekiest of fours with a reverse paddle off Ashwin.

  19. Not outpublished at 08:11 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2021

That's another good on-field decision. The ball hit Pope's arm. There was no bat or glove involved.

The third umpire checks the lbw as well but that's not even close.

India are now out of reviews.
