Ah. The Ben Stokes show is over.

Can we criticise him for falling to an attacking shot after the innings he has played? Probably not. He goes for another slog sweep but gets more height than distance.

Cheteshwar Pujara gets under the ball at fine leg and almost drops it but eventually clings on.

I was lucky enough to work at Lord's a few summers ago and watch Root score a sublime ODI hundred against India before the infamous bat drop celebration. I know it's a one dayer, but Root's white-ball record is outstanding, one of the few in history to average 50+.

Stokes - shirt collar turned up to protect himself from the burning sun - looks right in the zone. He has a little chunter to himself after failing to work the ball into a gap for a single. The left-hander succeeds where he had previously failed a couple of balls later.

With the way things are going at the moment there is a lot of pressure on Virat Kohli. How long can he keep on bowling Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin?

I don't think he has the confidence in Shahbaz Nadeem and Washington Sundar to give them long spells because whenever they've come on to bowl it has been pretty easy for England to score.

    Brilliant, brilliant batting.

Ben Stokes has biffed the ball enough that the field is now spread. A short leg is the only close catcher.

As a result, Stokes and Root both drop the ball into the outfield and are able sprint twos. Top stuff.

    Andy Zaltzman
Test Match Special statistician on the Cricket Social

In his last 17 Tests - going back to the third and final Test in West Indies in early 2019 - Ben Stokes has averaged 58 with the bat with four centuries and six other 50s. He has also taken 33 wickets at 28.

Before that his form had been struggling after the Bristol incident. In his first 12 Tests since coming back he averaged 24 and scored at a strike-rate of 45.

  7. Eng 378-3published at 124 overs

    Root 165, Stokes 76

I've been wisely reminded that England score 477 on this ground last time they toured and still lost by an innings as India racked up 700.

That said, I really didn't expect things to go this well for England.

  8. Eng 378-3published at 123.4 overs

Ben Stokes is in serious nick. Bumrah bowls the slowest of slower balls and Stokes waits, waits and waits a bit longer before bashing the ball through mid-wicket for four.

Rob Overfield: It's comforting to know that for at least the third time in history, the best batsman in England is a Yorkshireman. Sir Len Hutton, Geoffrey Boycott and now Root.

Ishant's spell ends after two overs. Kohli turns back to Bumrah. India are in desperate need of a wicket.

Richard Sharpe: On the same day that Stuart Broad took 8-15 and Australia were bowled out for 60, Joe Root scored a century to put England 200 ahead before close. I was sitting behind 12th man Billy Root when he got there.

Ishant's whites get covered in Chennai red dirt as he sprawls to field off his own bowling. He gets a hand on a drive from Root which probably prevented a boundary.

  15. 'A tremendous opportunity for England's spinners'published at 06:55 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2021

    Jonathan Agnew
BBC cricket correspondent on The Cricket Social

If you're England's spinners, Jack Leach and Dom Bess, you should be looking very positively at this and not thinking 'oh no, the pressure is going to be on us'. They should be thinking 'wow, what a chance we've got here to win a Test match for England'.

What a tremendous opportunity - it doesn't happen too often in international sport that you have conditions so much in your favour.

    We've all been there, Daniel.

Ishant has been unlucky not to have taken a wicket in this innings. He has been probing and accurate. Root is having to be careful in defence.

Root would be getting some great support from travelling fans for this innings too, if such a thing was possible.

He nabs his first boundary of the session by going back to Nadeem and playing a trademark back-foot punch.

    The placement is perfection.

I was lucky enough to witness Root's very first Test hundred against NZ in 2013 at Headingley, and it is one of my favourite cricket memories. It was my first visit to Headingley and I watched it from the Western Terrace. It's fair to say the moment he got to 100 went down pretty well!

Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem, who Stokes reverse-swept out of the attack earlier, is going to begin from the other end.

Almost immediately Stokes returns to that reverse sweep but fails to make proper contact.
