Oooo, hello. I mentioned Dan Lawrence running down the pitch earlier and it looks like the umpire has just given him an official warning for doing it again.

Root comes down the pitch to plead the case for his young team-mate.

Unperturbed, the England skipper sweeps the next ball away for four again. It's silly how good he is at the moment.

  2. Eng 54-2published at 14.5 overs

"Yep, two," says Root after he goes back and hits into the off side this time. It's better than that. He gets three.

This is the first time India have conceded a 200-plus first-innings lead in a home Test since the Kolkata Test against England in 2012.

Is Joe Root from a different planet?

He smacks a sweep off Ashwin, the best spinner in the world who has taken 2-20. It almost goes for six.

I know what people are saying because England have dominated this Test, so if they walk away with a draw it will feel like a defeat.

We are a long way away from that though, so we shouldn't panic.

Joe Root is grinning about something in the middle. The pressure of the situation doesn't seem to be getting to him.

Lawrence isn't playing big shots but he is finding singles. He has 16 from his 42 balls.

  7. Eng 43-2published at 13.1 overs

There's swing immediately for Ishant to Root.

The big India quick is on 299 Test wickets.

It will be tough for India to survive four sessions just because of the number of balls that will, hopefully, be put on the right spot by England's spinners.

It doesn't matter how you play, the odd one is going to do something, and you are always in the game as a bowler.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that India will bat four sessions, these guys know how to play, but you just think if you are consistent on a pitch like this something will happen.

There's a lot of experience in that photo.

Kohli has opted for a change of attack. It's seam for the first time in the innings in the form of Ishant Sharma.

Lawrence chews away on his gum. He really does look like a young Nicolas Cage doesn't he? Lawrence looks calm despite everything going on around him, the ball popping and beating his bat. Rishabh Pant continues to cackle away.

  12. Are South Africa going to pull off remarkable chase?published at 07:18 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2021

What is it about fourth-innings chases at the moment? India chased 329 against Australia in January, West Indies chased 395 against Bangladesh yesterday and now South Africa are in a good position against Pakistan.

Chasing 370 to win the Proteas have reached 219-3 at lunch. Opener Aiden Markram has just reached his first century since March 2018, off 221 balls, hitting 12 fours and three sixes. He is joined by Temba Bavuma, who is unbeaten on 44.

South Africa, who still have Quinton de Kock to come, need another 151 runs to win from the two remaining sessions.

How much will these results be playing on Joe Root's mind?

    Follow that one here.

Settle down everyone. The master is here.

Root sweeps his second ball for four.

That is a very good line to bowl from Ravichandran Ashwin because you've got to play at it. If the ball doesn't turn and it hits the pad you are right in front of the stumps and you'll be lbw so you've got to play.

India are up celebrating once more. It felt like England had just weathered a storm but Ashwin gets one to turn and bounce to Sibley from round the wicket.

It takes the inside edge and the catch is safely taken by leg slip.

  18. Eng 32-2published at 10.5 overs

There are three fielders, palms out waiting for a catch around the bat. Kohli is in close at mid-wicket too. Each one of them is offering advice and encouragement, although the intensity has dropped just a tad.

    Sibley sweep fine for four.

Rory Burns' wicket is only the third time in the whole history of cricket that a spinner has struck with the first ball of an innings.

The most recent example was in 1907 at The Oval! The other example was in 1888.

Bess was excellent yesterday in my view, probably his best showing in an England shirt. But, for anyone just joining us, he looked tired this morning. Sundar and Ashwin got after him.

Nadeem now bowls a no-ball and it's signalled by that loud siren. Poor from India.
