  1. wicket

    Stokes c Pant b Ashwin 7 (Eng 71-4)

Ben Stokes comes and goes! This game keeps on rattling along.

Stokes tries to continue the scoring by pushing outside off but the ball turns and takes a thin edge.

    Nervy?

  2. Eng 71-3published at 18 overs

    Lead by 312

Stokes looks like he's going to play in a similar, positive fashion to Root. He pushes hard and takes a quick single.

  3. Eng 70-3published at 17.4 overs

Stunning from Stokes on the fourth ball after drinks. He bunts Ishant Sharma back over mid-on for four.

That's the first sign of aggression from Stokes nine balls into his innings.

India frustrated England in the first hour this morning before England eventually wrapped up the lower order with the new ball. James Anderson and Jack Leach took two wickets each.

India had reduced England's lead to 241 but importantly took up some time.

England did not enforce the follow on and then lost Rory Burns with the first ball of their innings.

It has been tough going with the ball doing plenty and they have lost Dom Sibley and Dan Lawrence since as they look to reach a point at which they can declare.

Joe Root, once again, looks to be batting on a different pitch to everyone else.

If that's the case, England aren't going to score another 100 runs in an hour before tea. They'll be batting into the evening session if they want a lead of 400.

England will be thinking the declaration target has to start with a 4.

If England were to get bowled out for another 70 it would probably be enough runs but I can't imagine Joe Root declaring with that sort of lead.

It is looking like a different game when Root is batting anyway.

    Lead by 305

That boundary to Root took England's lead beyond 300. Ben Stokes is off the mark too.

It has been another absorbing hour since lunch. Time for a drink.

Root looking so comfortable out there. It's like an exhibition or a net session for him.

What more can I say about Joe Root? It's just ridiculous. He gets out the reverse sweep now and again it's four runs.

When you're this good it's not a difficult pitch at all.

  12. Eng 58-3published at 16 overs

    Lead by 299

This innings is hopefully showing how tough it will be for India to chase any kind of score on this pitch. There's turn and bounce for the spinners plus reverse swing and uneven bounce for the quicks.

  13. Postpublished at 07:38 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2021

Ishant is just the third India quick bowler to take 300 wickets after Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan.

He now has Ben Stokes in his sights.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 15.3 overs

    Lawrence lbw b Ishant 18 (Eng 58-3)

There were a few squiggles on Ultra-edge but nothing definitive to overturn a decision.

After that it was plumb. The ball has swung in and kept low.

The India dressing room rises to applaud Ishant Sharma for his 300th Test wicket.

  17. Postpublished at 07:35 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2021

The ball has snuck under the bat and onto Lawrence's pad. But is there a tiny flick on the bat?

  18. England reviewpublished at 07:35 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2021

Oh this is out. It's 300 for Ishant Sharma.

The only thing that can save Dan Lawrence is an inside edge but he doesn't look confident.

Mat: Just seen a close-up of the ball - after 11 overs it looks like a dog’s chew toy. I'd have said it was 30 overs old at least! Is that due to the pitch, the make of the ball, or a bit of both?
