  1. Close of play at The Ovalpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Surrey 146-6 v Middlesex

The rain that moved in during the tea break has taken out the final session at The Oval.

A remarkable day where Surrey lost the toss in what appeared tricky conditions.

But the pitch played very well as Rory Burns and Mark Stoneman made their way calmly to 135-0.

But after Stoneman was wrongly given out caught behind, Surrey crashed in a collapse of six for seven.

Their worst collapse since 1903 saw Middlesex take the spoils from day one.

  2. Trent Bridge inspection at 17:40 BSTpublished at 17:21 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Notts 51-3 v Worcs

They're going to have a look in about 20 minutes in Nottingham to see if they can squeeze a bit more play in.

  3. Postpublished at 17:11 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Kent 44-0 v Glamorgan

Glamorgan have some ground to make up on the top two in Group Three but are very much in the shake up - despite only one win so far.

You would think at least two if not three wins would be needed from their final four matches to qualify for division one come September.

Not a great start at Canterbury with the home side clipping along at four-an-over so far.

  4. Inspection at 17:15 BSTpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Hants 176-5 v Leics

  6. Postpublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Kent 22-0 v Glamorgan

So Canterbury is the only place for live cricket at the moment.

Kent have a steady start having lost the toss.

Ollie Robinson has twice punched Michael Hogan nicely off the back foot through point for four.

  7. Close of play at Derbypublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Derbys 48-0 v Durham

The showers keep on rattling through at The Incora County Ground and so they've decided enough is enough for day one.

  8. rain stops play

Rain stops play at The Ovalpublished at 16:36 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Surrey 146-6 v Middlesex

They're not coming straight back out after tea at The Oval as rain has set in from the West.

  9. Evening session delayedpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Essex v Warwickshire 150-7

The bad weather has finally zipped its way across to Chelmsford and there will be a delay to the final session of day one.

No rain yet, but the umpires have deemed the light isn't good enough to get going.

  10. Close of play at Bristolpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Glos v Somerset 45-1

All done at Bristol thanks to very heavy afternoon rain.

Only 20.2 overs possible this morning.

Somerset lost the toss, lost Tom Lammonby run out for only 3 but then steadied until the rain began to fall.

  11. 'Astonishing afternoon'published at 16:20 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Tea: Surrey 146-6 v Middlesex

    Kevin Hand
    BBC Radio London

A day after admitting this was the toughest time of his 13-year tenure as managing director of cricket, Angus Fraser saw his fledglings rip back at a strong Surrey top order in an astonishing afternoon display.

The hosts opening pair put on 135 for the opening wicket but the youngsters of Ethan Bamber, Martin Andersson and Blake Cullen to force a collapse under leaden skies.

On a cold and blustery day the ball has seamed and swung throughout but Middlesex only warmed to the task after lunch with four consecutive maidens - but it was in the second half of the session that the fun began.

When both openers fell on the same score an opportunity arose and the promising trio of young seamers, along with the 27-year-old Tom Helm, grasped the moment to drag the game, on a bowler friendly surface, back into the balance.

  12. Close of play at Wantage Roadpublished at 16:17 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Northants v Lancs 59-0

That announcement of tea may have been a mistake by the scorer!

It's been raining steadily all afternoon in Northampton and the umpires have decided there's no chance of any more play for day one.

Just 16.5 overs sent down after Northants won the toss but Lancashire used that brief time to skip along to a great start.

  13. Tea at The Ovalpublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Surrey 146-6 v Middlesex

An extraordinary half-hour has totally transformed the day at The Oval.

Surrey were cruising through Rory Burns and Mark Stoneman but a rough caught-behind decision and a marginal lbw sent them both back.

Then after that Surrey's middle order came and went very quickly indeed.

A collapse of six for seven - Surrey's worst since 1903!

  14. 16:30 BST start at Canterburypublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Kent v Glamorgan

They've been hanging on for an awfully long time today at the St Lawrence Ground but play is going to get underway at last.

Glamorgan have won the toss and, quelle surprise, are going to field.

  15. 'Rebuilding job undone'published at 16:10 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Tea: Essex v Warwickshire 150-7

    Glenn Speller
    BBC Essex sport

A good rebuilding job by Michael Burgess and Tim Bresnan has rather been undone in the latter part of the afternoon session.

They came together at the perilous position 76-5 and took the score to 132 before Burgess left one from Peter Siddle and was bowled.

Dominic Sibley had earlier looked to be settling himself in for a long stay but his dismissal for 43 will have come as a huge relief to Nick Browne who dropped the England opener at leg slip when he was on 32.

It was the 23rd dropped catch by an Essex fielder this season which was then followed by a 24th when Simon Harmer put down an extremely difficult chance offered by Burgess at second slip. The South African more than made up for it later with a one handed take to remove Olly Stone.

Up until Burgess’s dismissal it was looking a lot more of an even contest at a very wild and windy Chelmsford where the lights are on.

  16. Tea at Wantage Roadpublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Northants v Lancs 59-0

It's been yucky in Northampton for quite a while (no giggling there!)

They're taking tea but it's debatable if any more play will be possible.

  17. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

Clark lbw Andersson 1 (Surrey 142-6 v Middlesex)

    Another one! Incredible stuff!

Yet another innocuous delivery but Jordan Clark plays outside the line and is the latest lbw.

    This is carnage from Surrey.

    They've lost six for seven!

  18. Bears seven downpublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Essex v Warwickshire 141-7

One wicket has brought two for Essex.

Olly Stone has just edged Sam Cook to Simon Harmer in the slips and it's another sharp grab from the South African.

Big boost for the defending champions just before tea.

  19. wicket

WICKETpublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Smith c White b Helm 0 (Surrey 141-5 v Middlesex)

    Oh goodness me!

Jamie Smith nicks to first slip and Surrey lose another!

Smith props out to a length ball and edges straight into Robbie White's hands.

    This is extraordinary.

Surrey were totally in control and now they're in trouble.

  20. wicket

WICKETpublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    Foakes c Simpson b Andersson 0 (Surrey 140-4 v Middlesex)

Two in the over for Martin Andersson!

A lazy flirt outside off by Ben Foakes stuck in the crease and he edges behind to also fall for a duck.

    Surrey were 135-0.

Quite the turnaround shortly before tea.
