But, as he pushed forward to James Fuller, the Warwickshire left-hander appeared to have got outside the line of off stump - and the way the ball whistled through to Hampshire wicket keeper Tom Alsop who took and celebrated the catch indicated an inside edge.
Either way, as the old timers still maintain, if the umpire says you're out, you're out, and Yates has gone just 23 runs short of what would have been a fourth ton in six County Championship games at Edgbaston this summer.
