  12. Charlesworth helps Glos edge aheadpublished at 12:51 British Summer Time 14 September 2021

    Glamorgan 309 v Gloucestershire 316-8

    Nick Webb
BBC Radio Wales at Sofia Gardens

Opener Ben Charlesworth, batting down the order because of a side injury, made a useful 44 to edge Gloucestershire into the lead just before lunch.

Both sides have something to take from the opening session as Glamorgan claimed four wickets but the visitors made sure of at least three batting points.

Glamorgan struck with the second ball of the day when David Lloyd trapped Graeme van Buuren lbw without addition to his overnight 65, but the young pair of four-day debutant Ben Wells and Charlesworth gave the visitors some momentum against the old ball.

Wells made a composed 40 before edging Timm van der Gugten to slip once the new ball came, but despite Zafar Gohar quickly edging Michael Hogan to Chris Cooke behind the stumps.

Charlesworth on 44 eventually had his off-stump knocked back by Ruaidhri Smith, bowling far more tightly than in his first red-ball spell of the season after injury.

And that's it, Lancashire propel themselves to the top of the Division One table as things stand, while Somerset's title hopes are over for another season.

Player of the match has to be Lancashire's Luke Wells. 103 in the first innings, followed by a crucial 3-8 with the ball. Excellent stuff, he's given his side a real chance in the title race.
