Watching Warwickshire pile up the runs at Lord's, it's hard to believe Lancashire's collapse to 78 all out on day one actually happened.

Although the Red Rose county picked up seven wickets - three of them to spinner Matt Parkinson - centuries by Will Rhodes and Rob Yates have put the county champions in a position of total command.

The question now is how much resolve Lancashire can muster when it's their turn to bat again, but the weather forecast for the next three days is looking a bit dodgy.

The umpires come together, get their light meters out and off we go.

344 runs today for the loss of seven wickets, an unbeaten 150 from captain Will Rhodes and a lead of 386 - it's impossible to imagine how Warwickshire could be in a better position.

With Moeen Ali ruling himself out of selection for the Test team, there is a space for a spinner.

Jack Leach has played overseas but not at home, while Dom Bess seems to have fallen out of favour since the tour of India.

Matt Parkinson has played one-day cricket for England, but not in Tests. And this spell this afternoon is a useful reminder of his skills.

Very controlled, with few four-balls and definite turn, as is natural for a leggie.

But will the fact that he bats at number 11 count against his chances?

Will Rhodes has seen wickets tumble at the other end since tea but he has kept his composure.

A single down to long-on is enough to bring up his 150. Well batted Skip!

Spin does the trick at the other end, too.

Danny Briggs gets a thin edge behind to Alex Davies and Luke Wells now has his second wicket.

Briggs won't be too disappointed to see the spinners having joy out there.

  11. wicket

WICKET Bresnan c Wells b Parkinson 4published at 17:52 British Summer Time 29 September 2021

    Lancashire 78 v Warwickshire 439-6

Tim Bresnan never looked comfortable and now his stay at the crease is over.

Well-flighted from Matt Parkinson tempts Bresnan into the drive, it takes the edge and Luke Wells snaps it up at slip.

Third wicket for Parkinson - easily the stand-out bowler for Lancashire. 3-69 off 28 overs is very respectable.

Lord's in the 1990s was almost carved up between Lancashire and Warwickshire.

Under captain Dermot Reeve, Warwickshire were the team to beat across all competitions between 1993 and 1995. Two County Championships, two NatWest Trophies, and a Benson and Hedges Cup.

In 1995, Reeve won the Player of the Match award as they beat Northamptonshire by four wickets in the NatWest Trophy final.

Allan Donald took three wickets and Roger Twose made 68 with the bat, but 12 tidy overs, astute captaincy in the field and guiding his team home with 37 not out showed Reeve at his all-round best in the Bears' glory years.

  17. wicket

WICKET Burgess st Davies b Parkinson 44published at 17:33 British Summer Time 29 September 2021

    Lancashire 78 v Warwickshire 425-5

Michael Burgess goes six short of his 50 as he is teased by a Matt Parkinson leg-break.

Burgess ends up out of his crease and Alex Davies whips the bails off to stump him.

Very smart wicketkeeping from Davies - one for captain Will Rhodes to note when he has to choose between Davies and Burgess next season.

That is Parkinson's 100th wicket in first-class cricket.

The low sunshine just over the Lord's pavilion is almost blinding the men on the field.

There are still 16 overs to go in theory.
