Well that was just lovely. It's time for me to hand back to Amy Lofthouse.

There are 38 overs remaining, hypothetically.

Nothing doing for Broad in the final over of the session. Nicholls is happy to watch the ball go by.
The players wander off for tea. There ends a traditional session of Test cricket.

How's this for a view? These cameras are set up on the staircase that leads to the media centre. The are linked to the photographer by a radio sensor - each one has its own frequency. When the photographer, wherever they are in the ground, clicks the camera they have, the remote cameras also spring into action.
This will probably be the last over before tea. Stuart Broad will bowl it.
There's half an appeal for lbw by Root but it looked to be sliding wide of Nicholls' leg stump.
Nicholls may not grab the headlines but he'd have the second highest average were he in the England team.

Rev Aidan Watson: I have never dismissed an England cricketer. But I have dismissed an England cricket commentator. A certain Dan Norcross snicked a first ball of the innings in a game between the Authors XI and a Church of England XI.
Daniel says this is the only time he has walked in a cricket match...

Someone else is spotted snoozing in the stands. They may be startled by an 'ooooo' when Broad beats Nicholls, the first real action for a while.

Root is on to up the over rate more than anything else. There's still 44 overs left.
Conway 69, Nicholls 10
So impressive has Devon Conway been it is easy to forget he's on debut. Apart from being hit a couple of times by Wood he has looked completely unflustered by the occasion.
He crunches his seventh boundary, hitting Root down the ground.

I dismissed James Bracey in an under-17s T20. He'd launched our openers all over the ground before skying a loosener from me. I've been waiting for his England debut so I can harp on about it for the rest of my life. Do pass my number on to Kane Williamson - I'm happy to chuck some up from either end...

Kane Williamson watches on from the Lord's balcony. He must be kicking himself to have got out straight after lunch. It looks flat now.
Stuart Broad returns.

Sleeper update. Our man is awake.
Root is going to have to bowl a few overs here or he'll find himself a few quid worse off for a slow over-rate. New Zealand are just ticking along against the England skipper.

Devon Conway is doing such a good job. He's absorbing a lot from the legs of the England's bowlers.

Henry Nicholls has left brilliantly today so far. He hasn't thought to chase the ball and England are a little bit frustrated. Their hard-won position is just slipping away a little.
Anyone else beat Alastair Cook at something? Dominos? Badminton?
Back in the London heat, Wood ends up on his hands and knees after bowling a bouncer. When Wood gets his statue outside Lord's it should be in that position.

Again, not cricket-related, but I once beat Alastair Cook in a three-legged race at our children's nursery sports day ... in the parents race! I don't know who I was paired with but he should really share in this glory too.

He must have money to burn. Remarkable.
Root twirls through another low-key over. I still think England will miss Jack Leach. I've no idea who I'd have left out mind.
