England's batting has been poor but you've got to look at the selection as well. If the plan is to bat first if you win the toss at Edgbaston, surely you want a spinner when the opposition are batting last?

Mark Wood defends his first ball.

We need him to do this but for about three or four hours, not half an hour.

    Phil Tufnell
Former England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

He was just trying to keep something together as everything fell apart around him.

That's one of the most dejected walks off I've ever seen.

This could be curtains in three days - after winning the toss and batting first!

Joe Root barely played an attacking shot until then. And now he's gone. He didn't even wait for the umpire's decision.

So out of character that innings.

The skipper is gone. Start searching for other things to do tomorrow.

Joe Root's eyes light up as there is a little bit of width from Ajaz Patel, but there's also a little bit of bounce, and Root can only nick behind.

He didn't even wait for the umpire to give it. He was off.

England are still trailing by nine with three wickets left. This could well be over today.

It was a strange performance at Lord's by England - a total lack of energy. And it's no surprise it's followed by this once you get yourself in a negative mindset.

He won't want to watch it back.

I was supposed to be going tomorrow. First live event in two years. First ever day of Test cricket. It's sunny. At 3pm a full day looked possible. I despise this England side. Plans ruined and I hope half of this team never play for us again.

Olly Stone keeps out five deliveries from Neil Wagner.

There's around an hour to go today.

This is the second fullest Neil Wagner has ever pitched the ball in a series in his career.

I love Neil Wagner. What a thoroughly fantastic bloke. `

Yes, Neil Wagner is asking for the big hammer thing to be brought out to stamp down his footmarks.

He did it himself on England's last tour of New Zealand in 2019. Please do it yourself Neil, and cheer us up.

New Zealand have bowled half a metre fuller than England on average. That's the key to taking wickets with swing bowling.

And their catching has been exceptional.

I can already hear the words "we're a young side who are learning" ringing round my head.

This is embarrassing. The empty platitudes are just dull. Major changes are required.

Before the series Stuart Broad told me England expected to win this series and the one against India that starts in August. "It is what we do in England", he said. They are going to have to go some to win this series.

Oh, close! Olly Stone pushes at a delivery, and gets a thick edge, but it drops just short of third slip. That shows how slow this pitch is because Stone went pretty hard at that.
