    Alex Hartley
England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

She has a massive smile on her face and rightly so. That is a brilliant shot. Straight out the middle of the bat - she's timed the pants off of it.

  2. Eng 49-0published at 10 overs

    Target 245

    Hannah Rowe replaces Sophie Devine.

But it's more of the same as she drops short and Winfield-Hill plays a glorious back-foot punch to take herself into the 30s. She's got to make this start count.

End of the powerplay and it undoubtedly belongs to England.

Winfield-Hill's ODI scores this summer are 16, 42 and 35 against India and 21, 39 and four so far against New Zealand.

That is dismissive. The sort of stroke you need to be in decent nick to play.

  5. Eng 42-0published at 9 overs

    Target 245

Again too short from Jess Kerr and it's punished by Lauren Winfield-Hill. The medium pace from both ends isn't working for New Zealand, it's too samey, not much swing and England have adapted nicely.

    Georgia Elwiss
England all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

England will know they need to elongated these partnerships. They've batted well in periods in this series but in ODI cricket you need to do it for longer.

  7. Eng 38-0published at 8 overs

    Target 245

It looks like a dream pitch for batting. Winfield-Hill and Beaumont look mostly untroubled, which makes the decision to leave out Molly Penfold in particular baffling.

She must've pulled up sore or with a niggle after the last game - Tahuhu's rest is understandable, having played three in a row, but it was the first of the tour for 20-year-old Penfold. Some extra pace right now would just help New Zealand get something from this pitch.

That's a good shot from a player who is in good nick but frustrated with the scores she's got so far.

  9. Eng 36-0published at 7 overs

    Target 245

Jess Kerr beats Tammy Beaumont with a beauty that just goes past the outside edge. She just hasn't found that perfect length consistently enough to trouble the batters yet.

And that's proved as Lauren Winfield-Hill pulls a short ball firmly for four, and it's followed by a wide.

Glorious. You will not see a better shot all day. That is a wonderful cover drive.

  12. Eng 29-0published at 6 overs

    Winfield-Hill 17, Beaumont 9

Full, bit of width and Tammy Beaumont tucks in. Absolutely nailed through the covers for four runs. She likes it too, holding the pose to just admire it a little longer.

Winfield-Hill has got a number of good starts but she'll be looking for that big score and really cement her place ahead of a busy winter.

  14. Eng 25-0published at 5 overs

Winfield-Hill drives aerially but straight between the two fielders on the off side. A couple of loose shots already from England's openers, but they're still there - and that's the key.

We've seen Lauren Winfield-Hill get starts in this series, she'll know she has to kick on from here. And I think she will feel pressure [for her place]. You've got Danni Wyatt, who's opened the batting many times for England, and domestically you can't look beyond Eve Jones who's scored stacks of runs this summer.

  16. Eng 20-0published at 4 overs

Jess Kerr and Sophie Devine have started nicely for New Zealand but already you can tell they're just missing the buzz that Lea Tahuhu gave them when she opened the bowling.

And as I say that, Tammy Beaumont pokes uncertainly outside the off stump, edges it but luckily for her, goes past slip.

New Zealand resting their two most threatening bowlers in a must-win game. Ridiculous.

    Martin, Newcastle

  18. Eng 10-0published at 3 overs

Lauren Winfield-Hill gets England's first boundary, whipping the ball through midwicket and it just evades the dive of Hannah Rowe on the boundary.

She retains the strike after a streaky drive evades the hand of backward point. Tammy Beaumont has only faced one ball so far.

  19. How's stat?!published at 16:52 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Phil Long

It's Tammy Beaumont's 57th consecutive ODI today, beating the record of 56 held by Charlotte Edwards.

  20. Eng 2-0published at 2 overs

    Winfield-Hill 2, Beaumont 0

Sophie Devine takes the second over.

Lauren Down pulls out a stunning dive at cover to save a certain boundary off a full toss. That's the sort of commitment New Zealand are going to need for the duration of this innings, and they've been on it so far.
