  • First Test, day two, Antigua

  1. WI 188-4published at 61.0 overs

Craig Overton replaces Joe Root after a couple of overs from the England skipper.

Nkrumah Bonner is on to a shorter one with his second ball as quick as a flash, though, and with a wristy thump back through the square leg boundary for four.

England unable to back up Jack Leach's excellence at the other end at the moment.

  2. WI 181-4published at 60.0 overs

Another half dozen balls from Jack Leach which the West Indies don't score off. His eighth maiden over on the bounce.

This Test will go the five days if Leach continues like this.

Alex Thomas: I’d really love to see Jack Leach rip through a couple tonight and finish with a four-for… after being mismanaged in the Ashes, it would be great for his confidence!

    Hello!

Joe Root drops one in Jason Holder's arc and with a big swing the West Indies all-rounder plonks him down the ground for six.

    Effortless from Holder.

  5. WI 174-4published at 58.0 overs

The sun is going down in the distance so there's a dullness to the Sir Vivian Richards stadium in contrast to the striking pastels of earlier.

Jack Leach is patiently probing away outside the left-handed Nkrumah Bonner's off stump but the West Indies batter has confidently picked his moments to defend and leave thus far.

    Another Leach maiden.

  6. WI 174-4published at 56.3 overs

Joe Root, his shirt with No.66 on it billowing in the wind, brings himself into the attack to see if his off-breaks can break this indefatigable partnership between Jason Holder and Nkrumah Bonner.

Holder uses his reach to turn a delivery from the England skipper into a half-volley which he crisply strikes down the ground for four.

A bit of a conflab involving Joe Root, Jason Holder and the umpires about a spot on the pitch where there appears to be something awry.

A chap from the groundstaff with a garden leaf blower is currently out there blowing soil around.

  8. WI 167-4published at 20:56 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2022

    Trail by 144 runs

Jack Leach finishes off the two balls of his over to notch up another maiden.

Play will restart at 20:55 GMT. In theory, end of play will be 21:40, with an extra half hour for the slow over rate, but in reality it'll probably be too dark by then.

England, you suspect, will be a little keener to get out there and put pressure on the West Indies batters in what remains of play today.

It's a poor pitch, but not one that's necessarily going to get a team bowled out cheaply. A partnership of 40 in 20 overs just demonstrates that if you're simply intent on keeping your wicket and not playing a shot, it's difficult to get people out on this pitch.

But similarly it's difficult to play a shot - that's where the risk comes in. At the moment, West Indies are refusing to take any chances at all. Not surprising, because they're still 144 runs behind.

Jack Leach has started well, bowling at the right end of the ground to get the drift he needs. He's bringing both edges into play and has been fairly attacking. He has also been given a nice long spell from Joe Root which will do his confidence a world of good.

Jonny Bairstow deep in serious conversation with Paul Collingwood on a technical batting aspect.

Things are a little more light hearted moments later when he gives Mark Wood a firefighter lift over the boundary rope.

Play to restart in just a shade under 10 minutes time.

If i was playing for England in the West Indies i think i would hold the record for amount of time I'd need to go off the field from having eaten my body weight in curry goat and jerk chicken. Can we get a how's stat for who holds that record?

The covers are being dragged off in North Sound. We should be back under way fairly soon I think.

We still have another hour or so of play, which can go on to the very precise time of 21:47 GMT we are told by our radio colleague Tim Peach.

In case you missed it, England suffered a defeat to West Indies at the Women's World Cup in New Zealand earlier today.

"England engineered their own downfall," was the verdict of my colleague Stephan Shemilt in his report from match in Hamilton.

Rain stops playpublished at 55.4 overs

Jack Leach manages four dot balls of his latest over before a rain delay.

The blue tauplain is dragged over the playing surface by groundstuff in mix and match of red shirts and coats. The umpires have the brollies up.

Hopefully this won't go on too long.

Of equal toil is Craig Overton. He slips in a bouncer among his wicket-to-wicket stuff third ball. He finishes the over clutching his shoulder, but let's hope that's nothing too serious.

"Going nowhere lads" pipes up Ben Foakes in reference to the current ponderous nature of West Indies' batting.

Mark Burt: Some very poor dismissals now from both batting units. However given this is the number nine team in the world Test championship versus number eight we shouldn’t be that surprised. Both teams are very average and it’ll be the one that makes the least howlers that wins.

  20. WI 163-4published at 54.0 overs

Lots of encouragement from Ben Foakes to Jack Leach as he wheels through another over of left-arm spin.

"Oh Leachy, Leachy. I like that." He chirps from behind the stumps.

Leach clocks up six dots, and is doing an important job for his team here.
