  1. Eng 55-4published at 24 overs

Lyon is grinning as a ball turns sharply to Pope. The England youngster chops down on it to keep it out before Hameed guides the final ball smartly down to the boundary.

Lunch is looming. Can these two get there?

Green has the potential to hold down the number six spot as a batsman. He'll get some wickets and be quite useful with the ball. He's had a fair bit of back trouble, which has been a hold-up.

  3. Eng 50-4published at 23 overs

    Hameed 20, Pope 13

England fans may not know too much about Cameron Green but there's plenty of excitement about the 22-year-old in Australia. He's more of a batting all-rounder, already racking up eight first-class hundreds. He still hasn't taken a wicket in his four Tests.

    He begins with a maiden.

    Another Australia bowling change.

Towering all-rounder Cameron Green is on for his first bowl in an Ashes series.

  5. Eng 50-4published at 22 overs

Lyon rattles through another over, the highlight Pope clattering a pull shot into short leg's shin. I hope he has the pads on.

These two have put on 21 since Ben Stokes fell.

You'd expect the bowlers to bowl well on this track, but I still think if England can scramble to 200 they can get something out of this.

  7. Eng 50-4published at 21.1 overs

How long had it been, Ethan? Three months?

England have at least reached 50, something I didn't think was a formality an hour ago.

Ah the BBC Sport headline: "England slump"... hello old friend.

  9. Eng 49-4published at 21 overs

    Hameed 19, Pope 13

Two singles come in Starc's latest over - both of them well-judged. For the first time the crowd seem to be falling into that classic Test match hum.

It looks like a good pitch. The bounce is so true.

  11. Eng 47-4published at 20 overs

There's the first "bowled Gaz" of the series. I think we'll hear that a few more times. Hameed defends and then removes his helmet, revealing his long untidy hair. It's sweaty and steamy at the Gabba.

  12. Postpublished at 01:38 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2021

Nathan Lyon hands his cap to the umpire to huge cheers.

A reminder the Aussie spinner is on 399 Test wickets...

  13. Eng 47-4published at 19 overs

    Hameed 18, Pope 12

I'm watching this with the commentary/sound about two seconds ahead of the pictures. It means I hear ball on bat and a terrifying yelp of "catch it!" before actually seeing where the ball is hit.

On this occasion it's Pope driving through the covers for four. He looks good.

  14. Eng 43-4published at 18 overs

    Hameed 18, Pope 8

Steve Smith - the man who never stands still - is already shadow batting in the slips. He clearly has as much faith in the England middle and lower order as many of our readers.

These two have 25 minutes or so to survive until lunch.

Arthur Sharpe: India bowled out for 38 by Australia, win series 2-1! Lulling Aussies into false sense of security probably our best hope.

  16. Eng 43-4published at 17 overs

I'll try my best not to jinx him but Ollie Pope looked good there, driving Starc through backward point. The ball slows to a trickle across this green outfield but does eventually reach the boundary sponge.

  17. Eng 39-4published at 16.3 overs

John, I think you may be getting a call-up during the series if we're banishing people after one bad session.

John Jefferis: Just wondering if England's fortunes improve massively after this horror first stint of yours, will you be taken out of the live text squad for the rest of the series?

  19. Eng 38-4published at 16 overs

    Hameed 17, Pope 4

"How do you score a run off Josh Hazlewood?" asks Dan Norcross on TMS. Quite.

He has two wickets for three runs from six overs.

  20. How's stat?!published at 01:21 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2021

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

29-4 is England's worst score at the loss of the fourth wicket in the first innings of the first Test against Australia since January 1887 when they were 13-4 at the SCG.
