Amit: If a platinum duck is when a batter is dismissed on the first ball of the first innings of the entire match, what type of duck is it when a batter is dismissed on the first ball of the first innings of the series?

From 29-4, 59-4 seems rather good. Hameed and Pope, the youngest members of the England team, attempting to clear up the damage.

Not even the returning hero could dig England out of this one.

Shivam Pathak: Well that could have been much worse, that's for sure. Were a few moments where it looked like we'd be taking an early lunch. Of course Australia's session, comfortably. Pope and Hameed going well, settled nicely, picking their moments. Lot of digging in to do

That was about as bad as it could have been from an England point of view, wasn't it?

From a personal point of view, my house is too hot with the heating on and too cold with it off.

England's problems are minor in comparison.

    Thank you, Matthew.

I'm not entirely sure what has just happened.

    I feel for you, Dom.

Anyway, that's me done for a while. I'll be back later if John (see 1:26 GMT) allows.

Stephan Shemilt will take over from me when he's stopped eating.

It's gone much as you would expect. Australia bowled extremely well. England would have wanted to lose no more than two wickets. Australia on top, but the positive for England is the batting of Hameed.

  17. Lunch - Eng 59-4published at 02:02 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2021

    And that is lunch.

A dream start to the Ashes for Australia. An ominous one for England.

You've got time for 40 minutes of kip.

Errrm Ollie... Are you aware it's almost lunch?

Pope comes charging down the pitch, swiping hideously at Lyon.

  19. Eng 57-4published at 25 overs

There's not too much threat in this Green over and Pope and Hameed tick over. There'll be one more over before lunch.

Root made the right decision batting first. With four wickets down, he will cop criticism. There will be something in this track for a few days. England will have to bowl and catch well.
