Big, big appeal from Pat Cummins and Australia for lbw against Haseeb Hameed.

Cummins really, really liked it and got close to a beg.

There is only a brief chat about a review because Steve Smith is indicating straight away that it is too high at slip.

He's right too. It was going over by a couple of inches, but Hameed was very deep in his crease and will have to be wary of that.

Haseeb Hameed shuffles right back to Nathan Lyon and manoeuvres the ball into the on side for the first England run since lunch.

Oh! Beaten! Dawid Malan looks to get forward and defend against the off-spin, but it grips slightly and goes past the outside edge. Worrying signs for England.

Time for a bit of spin.

    Nathan Lyon is on.

What a delivery by Cummins. That has leapt from just outside the off stump. It's a jaffa. The ball of a big, strong fella.

    Burns c Carey b Cummins 13 (Eng 23-1)

    Gone! What a delivery.

Rory Burns had already been squared up and had a little prod at Pat Cummins, but this is a beauty.

It is banged in slightly short from the Australia captain, and it rises on Burns. He looks to play it, with an almost cut shot, but it is too close to him and gets big on him. It flicks off the glove and through to Alex Carey.

England are in a big hole.

Rory Burns watches the first ball go by, before solidly getting in behind the second.

Australia have a leg slip in for Burns, they know he likes a little flick round the corner.

    We're ready to go.

It'll be Pat Cummins first up, with Rory Burns on strike.

Burns and Haseeb Hameed, who is 10 not out, will resume in around five minutes time.

    England are 23-0 - a deficit of 255 still.

They've got to bat, bat, and oh, bat some more.

They won't want to, and can't afford to, lose more than one or two wickets in this session if they want to make Australia bat again at the very least.

We've got to give Rory Burns some credit I think.

Test match cricket is mentally draining and challenging - it is practically impossible for me and you to relate to the strain and pressure that he would be feeling.

Me, you and the other 16,000 people in this live would probably all have different opinions on whether he is the right man to open the batting for England, but he's shown some mental toughness to get through the king pair, the review and then guide England to lunch.

Can he keep going now? He needs to, for himself and his side.

    To England's batting then...

Facing Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon must be daunting at the best of times, but with a 278-run deficit must be quite frankly mentally shattering.

Rory Burns was on a king pair, and opted not to take the first ball. It is the first time he's done that in Test cricket when he hasn't had a nightwatchman at the other end.

When he did face up - to the fourth ball of the innings - he survived, but the Surrey batter was given out lbw to his third ball. He reviewed and survived and got to 13 not out at lunch.

These are the Australia wickets that fell this morning.

Chris Woakes picked up one to finish with 2-76, while Mark Wood claimed two - which was some reward for an excellent day yesterday - to have figures of 3-85.

Ollie Robinson finished with 3-58, Ben Stokes 0-65, Jack Leach 1-102 and Joe Root 1-29.

Australia added 82 this morning in 20.3 overs and grew their massive lead from 196 to 278.

It is highly likely to be a match-winning lead, the question is just when that will happen and how big the margin of success will be.

England were guilty of not helping themselves yesterday with dropped catches, wickets off no-balls and missed run-out opportunities and there was more of the same today. Yes, these either stick or they don't, but it is a missed opportunity and cost England 14 runs.

We'll spend the rest of the lunch break running through the best clips and moments from that first session.

Let's start with a mention for Travis Head. This was a big innings for the left-hander, with him just edging out Usman Khawaja in the battle to play in this game. He has repaid that faith, and then some.

We resumed on 112 not out and moved to 152 - as Australia went from 343-7 to 425 all out, a lead of 278.

Those 152 came from 148 balls and his counter-attacking innings has without doubt changed this game.

    Thanks Matt.

Morning everyone. Have you given up hope of England saving this game?

What's the best we can hope for? Making Australia bat again? That would be a small success at least.
