    Four!

Mitchell Starc has replaced Pat Cummins and he has been dispatched to the boundary straight up by Dawid Malan.

The left-hander stands tall and cuts away through point. He played a similar shot to the boundary off Nathan Lyon in the previous over too.

    He's up to 13.

Jack Leach has copped some flak in this Test match, but his lengths have been good and similar to those delivered by Nathan Lyon...

That's nipped back. It's pitched and come back into the left-hander.

    WOW! How has that missed!?!

Dawid Malan effectively shoulders arms to a straight one and it misses the top of off stump by literally millimetres.

Nathan Lyon can't believe it. Alex Carey can't believe it. The whole of Australia can't believe it.

Malan does the wise thing and gets off strike with a push into the covers. Good proactive running.

It's becoming a proper hot one in Brisbane today. The sun is shining on England's batting for the first time in the match. A good crowd in for the Friday, it looks a bit fuller than yesterday when the total was just north of 20,000 attending. Lots of vocal support for Pat Cummins with the ball, very much the crowd darling just at the moment.

Five wides! England will take them however they come.

Pat Cummins goes short and it flies over Dawid Malan and Alex Carey and away to the boundary.

Better from the Australia captain though, as he appeals for lbw against Malan but it is a half-hearted one because it definitely pitched outside leg stump.

Haseeb Hameed is then beaten as he looks to defend, before he plays a solid forward defence.

Every single ball is an event at the moment.

Arjun Singh: The bounce variation for the Burns wicket shows you can’t really blame Burns for that. Sometimes you get a good one early, and Cummins is the best bowler in the world in these conditions.

Here's how Pat Cummins got Rory Burns.

    A very, very good delivery.

Hameed seems to have enormous reserves of resilience.

I don't want to jinx Haseeb Hameed but he looks rather good against the spin of Nathan Lyon.

He turns round the corner, so Australia might want to think about a leg slip, but he looks comfortable playing flicks to mid-wicket and drives up to mid-off.

Carey went sideways, not forwards. If he'd gone forwards he might have been able to grab that. It's not a drop, but he might have made it into a catch.

    Edged! Short!

Should Alex Carey do a bit better there?

Dawid Malan looks to defend to Pat Cummins, but gets a fairly healthy edge, albeit played with soft hands.

Carey goes to his left, but can he come forward and take the catch? It goes to him on the half-volley, but it is probably only a yard in front of him. He parries it behind him for a couple.

The problem may well be, who do you bring in instead?

The Lions, England's B team in effect, are 99-8 against Australia A with the openers Rob Yates and Alex Lees making just two and one.

You can follow the score from that game.

Shane O'Neill: Burns is simply not good enough at this level, which has been apparent for a long time. Why is it so difficult for England to produce a decent opener?

Dawid Malan is off the mark with a push and run into the covers.

He was down the pitch earlier in the over, looking to be proactive with his footwork, if not his strokeplay.

Oh, my days. I'm going to say it is a battle England will not win after watching that.

Nathan Lyon pitches on middle and leg and it spin and grips past Dawid Malan, who was on the back foot and looking to defend.

    Unplayable.

Haseeb Hameed survives. He gets down to avoid a bouncer, before being solid in behind the rest of the over.

It is a survival battle at the moment. It is a battle England are unlikely to win.
